Verses 72 and 73 of Surah Al-Baqra.  I wud like to know which historical incident these verses r referring to .. it's linked with the life of Moses (pbuh)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And (remember) when ye slew a man and disagreed concerning it and Allah brought forth that which ye were hiding.
And We said: Smite him with some of it. Thus Allah bringeth the dead to life and showeth you His portents so that ye may understand.  (Glorious Qur'aan - Surah Al-Baqra 2:73-74)
Salaam brother TS.  Good question.  I had myself been hoping for long if someone could bring about some 'tafsir' for these two verses.  Luckily i did come across a tafsir recently.  Br. steve rockwell of sh. ahmed deedat centre in toronto, canada elaborated on these verses in his tv lecture last saturday.  He explained as follows (not exactly in his words but paraphrasing).
There was an old man in the community of prophet Moses (pbuh) who was quite wealthy.  Other family members and relatives of his were all wondering how much they would inherit from him after he died.   He had one nephew who was exceptionally greedy and could hardly wait to lay his hands on his old uncle's wealth.  So he killed his uncle and threw his body out on the road, making it look like an attack by an outsider.  He then began grieving hypocritically only to be seen of others.
Allah inspired Moses and guided him, so Moses suspected that something was wrong.  Allah then commanded Moses to smite the body of the old man with a piece of meat, and when Moses did that, the old man came to life.  Moses then asked him the cause of his death and he said that he was killed by his nephew.  Soon after revealing this truth, the man passed away again.  Thus the truth was exposed purely by the will, inspiration and commandment of Allah.
In the above verses "ye" apparently refers to the people of Israel or the Bani Israel, referring to the killing of the man by his own people.  This is my opinion.  And Allah knows best ..
Please note:  The above details are not mentioned in the Qur'aan.  It is likely that Brother Steve got this information from some version of the Bible.  But he didn't mention the source.  I presume that he got it from the New Testament because I haven't read about it in the Hadeeth collections either.
However, my advise would be, anything that's mentioned briefly in the Qur'aan like verses 72 and 73 of Surah Al-Baqra, but is expanded in much greater detail in the Hadeeth or Old / New Testaments, then these details should not be taken as a final confirmation.  It's important to remember that Hadeeth collections are man-made with a lot of controversy.  Similarly, Old and New Testaments (Torah and Bible) are also not original anymore at all.  The Quraan is the only Divine Scripture today that's fully original, Alhamdulilah.  Therefore, it's okay to get acquainted with explanations of Quraanic verses from other sources but let's not forget that the truth is only known to Allah.  Allah has also mentioned in the Quraan that the final explanation of the Quraan rests with Him alone.  So, any such detailed explanations given by people that are not mentioned in the Quraan can only be taken as the opinions of others.  Only Allah knows the final truth.
Hmmm .. this is informative.  i suppose u r right .. the details r probably taken from the bible cause i've also not come across it in ahadith though I consider both these sources the same.
thanks very much sister zeynab
