Title: Diamond-shaped flour savouries (Namak Para)
Post by: Ruhi_Rose on December 08, 2008, 06:27:13 am
 BismEm

This simple to prepare homemade Pakistani savoury makes great nibbles.  It especially taste great with a hot cup of evening tea or coffee.  Namak Paras are also a convenient snack for serving to guests with soft drinks or juices.  Try them, but don't over eat!  Though not unhealthy, this isn't typically a health food.

This is how it acquires its name.  'Namak' in Urdu means salt.  And 'Para' means portion.  Since the snack is cut into little diamond shapes, it's given the name 'salted portions' or namak paras :)

Ingredients:

2 or 8 oz Refined flour
3 tbsp vegetable oil
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp Salt

Vegetable oil for deep-frying

Method:

Mix all the ingredients together and knead. Roll the dough to a 1/4 inch- thick disc.

With a sharp knife cut the disc into 1/2 inch wide vertical strips.

Again cut in a slant about 1/2 inch-wide strips to get diamond shapes.

Heat the oil in wok.  Fry these pieces, a few at a time, on low heat till brown and crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain the excess oil on paper towels. Repeat till all the pieces are fried.

This can be stored for a week in airtight containers. Nimble at leisure :)  But a second reminder - have a small handful in a single day.  Since it contains white flour and salt and is deep fried, it's a heavy high calorie nibble.

Yums!!!!!  I love this snack but never made it at home.  Thanks for the recipe sister.  It looks quite simple.  InshAllah, I'll try it sooner rather than later.
