Title: Something on astronomy Post by: Zainab_M on March 03, 2009, 06:55:49 am A few months ago I saw a strange thing in the sky. Something like a huge shining star, but I'm positive that it wasn't a star. It also somehow didn't resemble one of those floating satellites, the movement of which can be observed and neither does it remain in the same location for more than a few minutes. But this light stayed for hours. When I went to bed around 12 a.m., it still stood there on the same spot.
I wonder if any of you have ever seen anything similar, what may have seemed to you, a huge star in the sky shinning bright and big? The common assumption of astronomers is that this is not a 'star.' It's the planet Jupitor. A friend of mine, who isn't an astronomer, but is very interested in this subject and she's read plenty of books and webpages on it. When I met her a few days later, I told her about it. She said it surely must have been Jupitor. She mentioned that for some reason, Jupitor is seen most clearly a little to the south of the globe. With binoculars the color of this planet appears quite dull with no glitters and 4 small dots over it. These are most likely 4 of Jupitor's many moons. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and the fifth planet from the Sun. It takes 11.86 years to complete its orbit around the Sun. While Earth is 93 million miles from the Sun which is considered a huge distance, the mean distance of Jupiter from the Sun is 483.7 million miles! And, while the diameter of the earth at the equator is 7,926.41 miles, the diameter of Jupiter is 88,846 miles. It is also surmised that Jupitor has a total of no less than 39 moons. Jupitor and Venus are said to rank among the brightest planets in the sky. They appear bright and beautiful because of the cloud cover on them that helps to efficiently reflect sunlight. The brightness of Venus is because, being the second planet outside the Sun, it's close to the Sun and the Earth. Jupitor shines brightly in the sky because of its size .. it's very huge. Praise be to Allah Almighty! No one but Him alone can fill the heavens with such beauty. The real beauty lies in matters created by Allah all over the universe. Very interesting post. I so much love reading or watching movies on astronomy. |
