Title: Pray the world doesn't get another flu pendemic
Post by: Zainab_M on April 28, 2009, 01:39:50 am
The sudden outbreak of "Swine Flu" in Mexico appears to be threatening the world.  By the way, Israel has appealed that swine flu's name should be changed.  The outbreak of swine flu should be renamed "Mexican" influenza in deference to Muslim and Jewish sensitivities over pork, said an Israeli health official Monday. Check the full story HERE. (http://yorkdispatch.inyork.com/yd/sections/offbeat/ci_12237425)

Any threats of pendemic flu brings frightening historical memories of the Spanish flu   (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic) that broke out in 1918 worldwide and is estimated to have killed between 20 to 100 million people around the globe.  It's said that more than 7% of the population of the United States was wiped off.  Views about its origin differ.  Some say the Spanish flu originated in the Far-East while some say it came from Kansas in the U.S.   What was still more surprising was that the pendemic lasted for more than 2 years - from March 1918 to June 1920.  I suppose this was because at that time healthcare awareness and its general standard was not as good as at present.   It is reported to have affected one billion people which at that time was about half the world's population.   It was known as the 'Spanish flu' because it received greatest media attention when it hit Spain.

Today, in this modern world, there are enough problems to deal with already.  Please pray to Allah Almighty (The Absolute, The Most High) that such illnesses that may have started because of the carelessness of some persons by disobeying His commandments and not observing proper hygiene in some part of the world does not spread everywhere.  Unfortunately in the era of the aeroplane when travelling by air is so fast and common, it takes hardly 24 hours for a virus to be carried half way around the world.

Yes it's very alarming.  At this point one has no idea whether or not it's the tip of the iceberg.  It reminds me of the piece you posted on Why Islam Forbids Pork.  (http://muslimvilla.smfforfree.com/index.php?topic=100.0)  Health professionals say it's not acquired by eating pork, but we do know for sure that it's acquired by the culture of eating pork.  Once this culture of eating pig becomes prevalent in a society, the need arises for those people to herd pigs and breed them and to set up pig farms.  Pig farms are the places where the virus causing pig or swine flu originates.

And yes you are right, nowadays it takes just hours for a virus to spread over continents.  It's reported that one or two persons (who had recently visited Mexico) have already been diagnosed with confirmed cases of swine flu in Israel.  But because it's in Israel, the media is simply reporting as "Middle-East affected by swine flu."  They aren't saying it's Israel.

I was also wondering, how far are these medical face masks affective in protecting people from getting infected?

Yes, I too pray for the same.  This damn virus is becoming a scary nuisance.

Information in the following link seems to be a rational and professional way of avoiding swine a.k.a. mexican flu as much as possible.

Use good hand hygiene - not masks - to prevent swine flu spread, experts say (http://health.lifestyle.yahoo.ca/channel_health_news_details.asp?news_id=17865&news_channel_id=1026&channel_id=1026)

"And unto those who are Jews We have forbidden that which We have already related unto thee. And We wronged them not, but they were wont to wrong themselves."  16:118  (Surah An-Nahl)

The above verse says that the Jews are prohibited to eat the same which have been prohibited to Muslims in the Quran.  This provides evidence to the fact that Jews are also prohibited from eating pork.  It's very likely that the Christians were also prohibited the same which they changed later on, just as they altered many things in their Divine Scripture.  And yes, you are right.  It's the culture of eating pork that brings about this type of flu, for if people didn't eat pigs and left them in the wild like other wild animals, there would be no need for pig farms.

Actually there are two types of masks, you must have noticed already.  Protective and respiratory masks.

Protective face masks do provide protection against germs but not fully.  They're loose fitting and can only stop the droplets from being inhaled by the person wearing it and help to stop the droplets & splashes of the person wearing it from spreading.  But it's not designed to filter the very tiny particles in the atmosphere.

Protective loose fitted mask

Repiratory mask is the more rounded one which fits the nose and mouth more tightly is better designed for stopping the small particles of virus.  It has a filter which prevents the small microscopic virus particles from being inhaled by the person wearing it.

BTW -- it was really very bad to see on BBC television today how roughly, almost cruelly, the Egyptian authorities were handling pigs for mass slaughter for fear of infection. They should know that as Muslims we are prohibited from eating pigs because of various reasons as analysed in the post linked by sister Rose and also in Mohammed Asadi's post.  But we Muslims should know that the Noble Quran does NOT tell us to treat pigs cruelly.  The Quran does not say that pigs are evil as animals or living beings or anything of the sort.  All animals must be treated kindly.

Pig farms are allowed in Egypt and Jordan for the minorities.  There are quite a lot of Christians in Egypt, particularly the orthodox Copts.

I agree with you 110% sister Zeynab.  I also saw some of those television images.  In Egpt these poor animals were really being handled badly.  I saw one man catching hold of the pigs and throwing them into a herd as one might throw an inanimate object like a bag of rice or flour.  This is what happens to the human mind and heart when they don't bother to reflect and understand the Noble Quran.  They move away from rationality and tenderness and end up becoming divided into monsters of various categories.  It's just so shameful.  They indeed make themselves a lot lower than the animals they despise, who are virtually innocent creatures.

ha!   🙄    I just happened to see this.  Exactly 11 years later, our worst fears have come true as humans keep violating the Laws of Allah Almighty.
