'Attar' is a kind of non-alcoholic perfume made from oils of flowers and various plants, popularly used in Middle-East and South Asia.

Attar perfumes can be made of hinna, roses, motia flowers (a kind of small white summer flowers commonly grown in South Asia with a strong pleasant fragrance especially at night), saffron.  Mud (or 'mitti' in Urdu) is used for making attar perfumes.  One might wonder how mud can be used for preparing perfumes.  Well .. when clean dry mud is dampened, it can give off a very pleasant wet-mud fragrance.  It's this fragrance that's processed to prepare attar perfume.

The most popular is of course the rose attar made with rose oil. It's not just used on clothes and on the skin, but also for aromatherapy - a pleasant and harmless way to help elevate one's depression or emotional blues.

ROSE ATTAAR

Its history

The fragrance of rose has a 2,000-year-history.  If there's an aroma that majority of individuls find deeply pleasing, it is the oil of rose. The scent is superbly sweet, rich, and deeply floral . Many of the classic perfumes we know today are based around the fragrance of the rose

Although the rose is famous for its fragrance, the flower contains very little aromatic oil by weight, and apart from the great demand for it, this is another reason why it's so expensive.

The rose fragrance has been popular since the 'fashion days' of ancient Egypt.  Rose oil was made by soaking rose petals in oil.

During the times of the Romans, Roman physicians used rose oil for healing the wounds of gladiators.

In the 12th century the Crusaders learned the technique of making attar from rose oil in the Middle East and they carried this tradition to Europe where Attar of Rose was referred to as "Rose Otto."

In the olden days before the invention of equipments & machinery for compressing rose petals, the petals were soaked and pressed with heavy objects to extract their fragrance and properties.

As real rose oil is costly, synthetic rose oils are also produced using chemicals known as "rose absolute."  This is much cheaper than real rose oil.

Rose oil in cosmetics

It's also a much-in-demand component in the preparation of cosmetics.  Rose oil is particularily helpful for mature skin.  The antibacterial and healing qualities of the Rose make it the perfect ingredient for skin treatments for irritated, damaged and ageing skin.  It encourages tissue formation, accelerates skin regeneration, and being an anti-inflamatory, it's used in the treatment of skin eruptions, allergic rashes, chafed and calloused skin, slow to heal wounds, burns, ulcers and bed sores.

Rose oil as medicine

Rose oil has powerful gum healing properties, and is widely used in dentistry. It is a major ingredient in the production of mouth washes and tooth pastes.

A steam inhalatiion of a couple of drops of Rose oil placed in a bowl of steaming water is helpful during bouts of tonsilitis, flu, and upper respitory tract infections. Simply rubbing rose oil on the forehead helps reduce headaches, migraine and insomnia.  It's also used for relieving nausea.

Rose water

And then, don't forget Rose water.  Apart from its very mesmerizing fragrance, Rosewater is affective in treating tired and ageing skin; acting as a toner to open pores and thread veins, has an antisceptic, conditoning and refreshing action on the skin, improves blood circulation,  and can be used in all skin types including sensitive and inflamed ones.  Simple Rose Water soothes and tones the skin, calms acne, and is a great treatment for dry scalps.  Men can also use it to sooth the skin after shaving.

Rose oil or rose attar for aromatherapy

A 15 - 20 minute bath with rose oil will relieve physical and mental fatigue, nervous stress, and soothe the upper respiratory tract.  Since ancient times it has been recognized that the perfume of the rose has a particular effect on the mind and emotions.
Rose has the ability to soothe grief and calm hysteria. It is used in aromatherapy today to mostly address womens issues of repression, frigidity and loss of love.

Aromatherapy at home:

If you haven't yet tried a warm oil aromatherapy treatment at home, you've surely missed much and you owe this to yourself and your family.  The experience feels heavenly and you feel you are in an enchanted world, far away from your daily worries of life.  It's a much needed one-hour break!   Here's how to go about with a rose oil aromatherapy treatment.

In a small stainless steel pan, pour a little sweet almond oil.  Warm it a little.  Remove from heat and test it on your skin to check if it's comfortably warm.  Then add to it the following blend: 10 drops of rose oil, 5 drops of sandalwood and 3 drops of jasmine.  Rub this fragranced oil mixture on sides of the forehead and neck, at the back of your wrist and any other part of your body you wish.  Throw some fresh rose petals around your bed, draw the window curtains or close the blinds to avoid glare.  Dip a pair of cotton b@lls in cold water.  Lie down on the bed and place the cool cotton b@lls over your eyes and relax, preferably with your favorite music or nasheed in low volume for 40 to 60 minutes.

End the treatment with a small, wet warm towel.  Keep a small towel ready by your bedside.  When you get up from the bed, wet the towel in warm water in the washroom sink and squeeze.  Then sprinkly a few drops of rose oil on it and gently run this aromatic warm towel over your face, neck, shoulders and arms.

And now, you'll feel so, so refreshed :)

Hope you enjoyed this read and do start using the attar perfume.  You'll love it!

O my!  what an interesting and attractive post!  this is lovely info for fragrance lovers like me.  I'm crazy about Ittar .. all fragrances.  A few days ago I got a roll-on hinna ittar from an Islamic store.  Really fantastic! and so soothing.  I apply it on my wrists before offering my salaat and also before going to sleep.

If I'm not mistaken, Rose attar with Damask rose is considered to be the best.  The Damask rose was introduced officially in Europe during the 18th century, brought from Persia.  It's also found in the wild around Morocco, Andalusia and the Middle East.  Thanks a trillion for this, sister rose.  your name matches well with this post :)

Okay, now listen to this.

Aromatic oils carry good news and bad news.

First the good news.  apart from the sweet fragrance and fighting depression and being good for skin, I've heard it's also supposed to be good for the heart and the digestive system.  Don't ask me how  8))  i guess because it makes one relaxed and relaxing always helps heartbeat and digestion.

the bad news!  certain essential oils can be hazardous for health  :o

check this list

Don't worry though, these oils are rare, no one uses them and they're clearly highlighted.
