Title: Adoption - what's important to remember about it
Post by: Zainab_M on October 02, 2006, 03:01:00 am
In the Qur'aan, Allah says that when you adopt a child, always disclose their true identity to them.

According to our perception, there are two reasons for this.  First, the biological father of the child has the right that his child must carry his name and be known as his father's child.  Secondly, it's important to disclose the child's biological identity to them in order to avoid incidents of incest in future.  For example, if two children, brother and sister, are adopted in two different foster homes since infancy and their biological identity is completely hidden from them, it's possible that later in life they might meet, fall in love and get married .. not knowing the truth about their biological relationship.

Agree 100%

Btw .. the culture of married women giving up their maiden name acquiring their husbands' family name is borrowed from the west. according to Islamic laws, a woman has every right to retain her own family name after marriage.  it's only the children who must get their father's name.

various Muslims r of the view that foster parents shouldn't teach adopted kids to called them 'daddy' and 'mommy.'  but i think this is a misunderstanding.  the Quran does not say this.  the Quran only says to reveal their true identity to them (as u have stated) as early as possible.  they have a right to know who they are, and the more u delay the more traumatic it might be when they learn the truth.  so once they're told about it and the truth is clear to them, it's ok if they address their foster parents as such.

and Allah-o-Aalim.
