Title: Reward and punishment have various grades (Surah Al-Imraan)

BismEm

Reflections on the Noble Quran

There are degrees (of grace and reprobation) with Allah, and Allah is Seer of what they do.   (3:163)  Surah Al-Imraan.

Righteousness and unrighteousness have varying grades.  This means, the piety and wickedness of different people are different in nature as well as degrees.   Good deeds of some persons may be higher than the good deeds of other pious ones, while the violations of some may be more sinful compared to the wrongdoings of other sinners.  Thus, reward and punishment will also be in accordance with the level of righteousness or unrighteousness of deeds and intentions of every individual.

Great information.  Makes total sense.  The same is also highlighted in Vese 19 of Surah Al-Ahqaf.

"And for all there will be ranks from what they do, that He may pay them for their deeds; and they will not be wronged."  (46:19)

Alhumdulilah, it reflects the perfection of Divine Justice.    Allah Almighty has also mentioned this aspect in Verse 6:133.

"For all there will be ranks from what they did.   Your Rab is not unaware of what they do."  6:133 Al-Anam.

Allah is constantly reminding us.  Still unfortunately many don't heed.  But they will come to know.  On the Day of Judgement it will be interesting to watch the now heedless and frivolous, who will then be too heedful and grim, fainting  with anxiety.  But ah!  it will then be too little, too late.

Alhumdulilah.   Divine Justice is too perfect.   Among the ranks, I suppose Al-Araf can also be included, right?   That would be Jannat, Jahanum and Araf.  And might this also mean that there are ranks within Jannat and Jahanum as well?   I know these are facts that are precisely known only to Allah.   Just wanna get the opinion of others.

In my opinion, Al-Araf can certainly be included.  Allah Almighty has explained the existence of The Heights as a specific spot or location in the next world for the mediocres or the middlings.  Additionally, as you inquired, I also think there are grades inside Jannat and Jahanum as well.  There are just so many types of people in this world.  Some maybe largely good with a few negative streaks, some the opposite.  Some a mix of positive and negative, but the positiveness and negativeness can vary in degrees within every person.  Only Allah Almighty can know the exact ethical situation that exists in the soul of each individual and His decision is based on His Knowledge which is too, too correct and accurate, absolutely infallible.    Therefore, yes, I think there are ranks in Jannat and Jahanum, and Al-Araf is also a specific grade that stands separate meant for the very ordinary in Faith and conduct, but apparently not lowest.   And only Allah has the exact information.

Thanks a ton brother.  Many Muslims apparently don't have a clue of this fact even though Allah has elucidated it very clearly and in detail.   I was talking to a Hadithist lady the other day who claims to read the entire Quran only during the month of Ramadan.  When I mentioned Verse 3:163,  she stared back at me with a blank face as if I was speaking Netherlandic.

That hadithist lady must be reading the Quran (that too only in Ramadan) at breakneck speed with a wondering mind whose first language is likely not Arabic either.   No matter how many times such folks read, their knowledge of the Noble Quran steadily remains at zero.  You cannot expect it to be any more than that.  Reading the Quran for these people simply means the theoretical act of reading, just as I could somehow read a book in German (as it's written with English alphabets) but without the slightest idea of what I'm reading.  These people don't understand nor do they want to, that the Noble Quran is a Book of Guidance and Knowledge, NOT a book of songs that simply needs to be read with a rhythm and swaying of the shoulders.   The Quran requires to be understood and acted upon.  Needless to say, reading the original in Arabic is very, very good,  Alhumdulilah.  But if you don't have a very command over the Arabic language, particularly literary Arabic, then reading a good and reliable translation alongside the original is just as important.  Otherwise how will they know or understand what Allah Almighty is saying and commanding?    And if they don't understand the Quran, they will never be able to act upon it nor will they have any awareness of even the basics of Quranic contents.   It's that simple.   Yet this very simple truth is apparently too difficult for those morons to conceptualize.

:D   very true sister Zeynab.   This is also the case with many Middle Easterners, I mean, in the northern ME.  I'm not talking about the jahilya oil rich Arabian peninsula which has returned with a vengeance to fully-fledged kuffari with no desire to pursue edification and are no more Muslims by any stretch of the imagination!   But even in places like Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt which used to be the citadel of knowledge and education in the years gone by, many today don't grasp the significance of understanding the Glorious Quran.  For them, it's just reading without concentration.  Whatever questions they may have on observance of Islamic rules, is put to the people they see as "scholars."  If they consult a sincere scholar, they get Quranic advise.  If they consult a phony scholar (that outnumber the sincere ones), they end up obliviously misinformed.   Sad  :(

Salams everyone.  This is such a significant topic, my husband and I were discussing it again yesterday.  We wanted your opinion - of course final answer is with Allah only - that does the grades (or ranks) of reward and punishment include only Paradise, Hellfire and al-Araf, or might there also be various grades within Paradise and Hellfire as well?

Have I made myself clear?

Wa'salam.   Yes sister, I understand your question.

As you rightly said, the final answer is with The Almighty only.

In my humble opinion, I think there are various ranks within Paradise and Hellfire as well. I say this on the basis of Verse 3:133 quote:  "And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Rab, and for a paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who ward off (evil);"   This is a remarkable Verse, Alhumdulilah.   Allah Almighty informs us of the size of Paradise which is so huge that we can hardly imagine - the size of the entire universe!   I would think, most likely, in an expanse as vast as that, there would be different grades in regard to its comfort and beauty for varying levels of piety among believers.  Similarly it might also be possible that if Paradise is so huge, Hellfire (which may take in more people than Paradise) would also comprise of a very large area and thus, having grades for different categories of sinners.  This is my opinion.  Only Allah knows best.

Right brother.  Your opinion makes sense.  So if that's the case, it would mean that the three basic grades are Paradise, Hellfire and Al-Araf ..... and then also ranks within Paradise and Hellfire.

Yes sister, that's what I think .. it's an opinion only Allah can confirm.
