Title: Does white flour help burns?
Post by: Ruhi_Rose on April 08, 2011, 02:26:59 am
I got an email from a relative with a story that using the regular white cooking flour helps burns to recover, sometimes within minutes.  The story also said that it helps serious burns.  But I don't know whether or not to believe it as this relative always sends weird stories that are only found in urban legends ..  :D   Any comments on this flour & burn story?

It must be that story that starts with "once I was cooking some corn ...." bla bla bla stuff, right? It's going around on email like hot cakes.  lol.  But believe me, it's bullshit.  Flour doesn't help burns.  There are people who also circulate stories that applying cold mustard or vinegar help burns.   I don't trust any of these crappy stories.  Even a minor first degree burn should not be taken lightly.  It ought to be treated according to professionl advise otherwise it could get infected and lead to complications.   The best and immediate treatment for burns is cold water.  If you burn yourself during cooking or ironing or while doing any other chores, dip the burn in cold water for at least 10 minutes or more, depending on the severity of the burn.  If it's  2nd or 3rd degree burn, you might need to keep it in cold water for over an hour.  Even after that when you remove it from the water, it will start to burn but lesser than before.  At this point you should apply some doctor-approved burn ointment and wrap it in a clean bandage.  Third degree burns can sometimes damage the nerves.  They need professional attention as soon as possible.  Definitely keep away from rubbish stuff like flour, mustard or vinegar.

Moreover, according to professional suggestions, I've read that Vitamin E oil from a capsule or vitamin E cream applied once a burn has healed helps to prevent scarring.  But also, to lessen scarring one can use the silicone scar gel.

haahahaha  ,,  ;D u got it right again.  It was this one.  I don't know why people do this.  I mean, sending email forwards is fine.  But one must make sure it's not wrong info which can be hurtful in case of accidents.

Mash'Allah, thanks for your very illuminating opinion, sister Heba.  I pray to Allah none of us get a 2nd or 3rd degree burns because they are so painful.  But 1st degree burns are very common and happens every now & then.  People need the right advise, not the urban legend or snopes stuff.

And the other crazy snopes stuff that are supposed to heal burns are said to be egg white, honey, vinegar and baking soda.
