Title: Does anyone have a homemade recipe for apple pie?
Post by: Ruhi_Rose on June 08, 2011, 06:36:13 pm
My kids love apple pie but they're getting tired of the ones from grocery stores.  They complain they don't  like the flavoring.  My husband says the same and so do I, though I cannot make out which flavoring they use in apple pie.  I only know it's Halal because the ingredients don't display any Haram item, otherwise we wouldn't buy it in the first place.  However, if anyone has made apple pie at home, I'm sure it gotta be a lot better Halal product than the commercial ones on grocery store shelves.

Yeah, I have a nice homemade apple pie recipe and a very old one.  It will be excellent during Ramadan.  It sure will taste different from the commercial pies of grocery stores.

You will need white flour (preferably pastry flour), 2 apples, corn oil, margarine, 4 tablespoon sugar, 2 teaspoonful lemon juice and one egg yolk or milk for glazing.

Ingredients + Preparation:
--------------------------------
You will need white flour 2 and a half cups (preferably pastry flour), 2 apples - peeled, cored and cut into small cubes, corn oil, margarine, 4 tablespoon sugar, 2 teaspoonful lemon juice and one egg yolk for glazing.

1) Make the pastry with flour and corn oil using only 1 tablespoon water until it looks like crumbs. Then knead with hands and roll out a bit more than half the dough. Keep the other bit aside. Cut to size of 7" round alu foil pie pan or same size pyrex casserole or any similar pie dish. Arrange it on the pie pan.

2) Then put in the fillings i.e. apple pieces, sugar, sprinkle lemon juice and drop a few bits of margarine distantly over the filling.

3) Third step, roll out the remaining dough. Cut the strips to arrange over the top of the pie as shown in the pic below.

4) Finally, glaze lightly with beaten egg yolk. Bake in pre-heated over at 425F for 40 to 45 minutes

I prefer to have my apple pie crust in strips

Picture of a slice of the apple pie.  This crust on top is a full
crust. But I showed this pic only to give an idea how the apple cubes look after
being baked.  I make it as shown in the first pic.

Apple pies are simple and great desserts for all times.  Different people make it in different ways.  Sometimes apples can also be combined with fresh raspberries or raspberry jam which is called apple raspberry pie.  This is just one of the many variations for apple pie.

Woooo ,, thanks my sis!  This looks mouthwatering like nothing else  :D  Yeah I follow it.  InshAllah, I'll be able to handle it.  I have no doubt it will taste a lot different than the grocery store pies.  The ingredients are organic and simple and I'm sure it'll have a fabulous flavor.

Sis Heba, here, take it  :D

u r welcomed sis  :)   You bet it will taste different.  In most standard recipes of apple pie including the ones in grocery stores they use cinnamon powder for flavoring.  That's why it doesn't taste too nice.  Instead, in my homemade recipe I use fresh lemon juice.  Additionally you can also spread a layer of seedless strawberry or raspberry jam on the rolled out pastry before filling it with the apple cubes, sugar, lemon juice and few margarine lumps.
