Title: A common myth about microwave debunked
Post by: Ruhi_Rose on May 04, 2012, 03:37:55 am
Ever since microwave began getting popular back in the early 1990s or late 80s .. the talk has been going around in every household that microwaves cause cancer.  Whenever some food it put inside it for heating and it's switched on, everyone runs far away from it thinking it's giving off cancer rays and if by chance the door opens, everyone is gonna die  ;D   But that's really not true.

An article published on Yahoo 2 weeks ago confirmed this myth.  I quote it.

"While microwave ovens do transfer energy to food using electromagnetic waves, the waves are incapable of causing cancer and are less harmful than the sun's rays. They're also contained within the oven and stop transmitting the instant a cycle ends or the door is opened."

The two other myths are:

-  Metal cannot be microwaved
-  Microwaves get hot

O yeah!  Thank Allah from me too.  I felt the same.  My husband keeps telling me it's not dangerous even though one shouldn't stay too close to it when it's running.    This information should help my paranoia with that piece of equipment in my home  ;D

I think microwaved foods lose their nutrients and they are very unhealthy.

Yeah, right.  There are lots of sites giving detailed info on microwaves.   Undoubtedly microwave has various downsides to it.  It's not the same as warming food the traditional way on the cooker or in the regular oven.  But the point I was highlighting here was the common presumption that while the microwave is on, many people think they need to stay very far away from it. That seems to be needless.  Keeping just 4 to 6 feet away is enough ....  that's what many experts say.
