Title: A late night mystery with no answers
Post by: Zainab_M on May 14, 2012, 01:42:24 am
 BismEm

I thought for a long time if I could call this a paranormal occurrence.  My inability to find an explanation for it convinced me that 'paranormal' was perhaps the only term to describe it.   The event didn't involve any sightings.  It was just a ceiling fan of my room that behaved in a very strange way.

The incident happened several years ago when I was living in my country of origin. Some renovation work was underway in a portion of our family house where my bedroom was located.  So I moved to the guest-room for some days which was located opposite my bedroom across a small hallway or lounge.

It was a huge house, upstairs and downstairs with 6 bedrooms, 6 washrooms, 2 living rooms, 2 dinning rooms and 2 kitchens.  I was in the ground floor.  It was a time when I was all alone in this very large house.  My brother had left for abroad a few years earlier and my beloved father had passed away only 3 months earlier.

Like all other rooms of the house, this guest-room on the ground floor that I was occupying was comfortably spacious with a set of windows overlooking our beautiful lush green garden.  The room had an air-conditioner and a ceiling fan as summers back home are warm and long.   The ceiling fan was electrically connected to a small board on one corner of the wall known as the 'regulator' with a small handle that would control the speed of the fan.  This handle on the regulator had 6 points - 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 indicating the different speeds.    If you turned the handle at '0' the fan would be off.   '1' was the slowest speed and '5' the fastest.   About three feet above the regulator on the wall, was a single switch also connected with the fan.  After setting the fan on the selected speed, it could be turned 'off' or 'on' simply by using that switch.  However, the fan could also be turned off by using the handle on the regulator .. by turning it backward to '0.'   This would always make a pretty loud ticking sound.    This speed control handle on the regulator was quite tight and firm.  To turn the fan off or to select the desired speed, this handle had to be moved manually.  It could never turn or roll on either side by itself.   That was impossible.  The photo on top will help you understand better.

It was the month of September, usually a warm month in the East but somehow that September was cooler than usual.  I didn't need the air-conditioner, but I was using the fan.   I woke up at 3 a.m. because of a splitting migraine headache but lay on my bed.  The fan was running at full speed and the room was dark as I had turned the bedroom lights off.  I felt quite chilly.  For a moment I thought of lowering the speed of the fan.  But then I decided to cover myself with a thin blanket instead, and left the fan running at high speed.   All of a sudden a heard a sound, similar to the ticking sound of the regulator handle and the fan gradually stopped.  Of course no one turned the handle because there was no one in the room .. rather no one in the entire house .. and I had locked the door of this bedroom.  The first thing that struck me was a power outage .. something so common in that part of the world.  But I could see the reflection of the garden light through the window.  That told me it obviously was not a power outage.  I then assumed that there was some mechanical problem with the fan, probably a fuse or some essential part might have gotten burned so the fan automatically stopped working.  Such mechanical issues are also not uncommon with ceiling fans.  I thought to myself that I would need to call the electrician the next morning.  I didn't think of it any more.  I was not at all worried.  I turned on my side and closed my eyes.  But I lay awake for more than 30 minutes and then slowly dozed off to sleep.  I couldn't wake up for my Fajr prayer that morning as I wasn't feeling too well.  I decided to offer qaza prayers after waking up later.

I woke up around 8.30 a.m., feeling considerably better.  At a glance I observed that the fan was still off and I did not bother to look at the regulator.  I was sure there was a mechanical defect because of which the ceiling fan stopped with a ticking sound.  After offering my qaza Fajr prayers and eating my breakfast, I called the electrician's workshop and informed him about the problem with our guest-room fan.  The electrician arrived with his heavy tool-box an hour later.   I sat in the lounge reading the morning newspaper while the electrician went to the guest-room to check the fan and work on it.   I knew it would take him a long time to fix it, as it usually does when a part of an electrical equipment gets damaged.  But much to my surprise, within ten minutes he came out of the room to tell me that the fan was working fine.  With a sarcastic smile on his face he told me "sister, how do you you expect the fan to run when you turned the regulator handle off ?"  That left my head spinning with amazement!  I told him I never even touched the regulator handle .. that I was in bed at 3 a.m. at night when the fan went off, though I did hear a ticking sound occuring on its own.   The electrician, though a very experienced one, had no explanation how that could have happened by itself.  He just laughed and had nothing to say.  I paid him for his visit and he left.  I could sense that he didn't believe me when I said I hadn't moved the regulator handle.  He obviously thought that I had turned the handle off in a sleepy condition and thus couldn't recall the next morning.   But I know that wasn't the case at all.  When I awoke at 3 a.m., I wasn't sleepy or drowsy.  I was wide awake with a headache, and I stayed awake for a long time.  It was during this period that the fan stopped by itself (not a mechanical defect) for which there was no explanation, except the explanation of the unseen only known to Allah.

After that day, I continued using that guest-bedroom for almost two more weeks till the renovation work of my permanent bedroom on the other side of the house was done. The guest-room fan never shut off on its own again.  It was a new fan and continued to work fine.

Though it's been a little over 10 years since this incident took place, uptil this day I've found no answers why or how that stiff regulator handle could shut the fan on its own by turning back to '0.'   Only Allah Almighty would have the answer.

My my !!  First things first.  You're brave girl sis !!!!!   In a house that vast I wouldn't be able to stay alone a single day.  And then to experience that incident, I would be a piece of nervous wreck right away.

I've seen these fan regulators with handles in that part of the world.  I understand exactly what you mean.  It's completely impossible for it to move by itself.  These handles are at best firm and need strong fingers to clasp them between the index finger & thumb to move in whichever direction one desires. Several such regulator handles are so stiff that one has to apply considerable force to turn them back or forward.  And you say you did hear the moving sound of the handle.  But I understand you didn't connect it with that as there was no one else around.  Absolutely amazing!  I have no answers either except that it was an incident involving the unseen.  Maybe that elemental spirit was a good one which thought you would be more comfortable with the fan off.  Usually during bad headaches, warm atmosphere feels better.  By the way, did you feel the presence of something even though you saw nothing?

Astonishing!  even the electrician had no idea how it could have happened, ha?  Did he open up and check the regulator for mechanical problems?   Another question .... was it your family house for a long time and did you or anyone of your family experience anything similar before or was this the first time?

And yeah .. hats off to your bravery my sis.  Maybe Heba is right, it might have been a good spirit.   Yet, when one is alone in a place that huge, the mere curiosity can drive one to a breaking point.  However, I've heard that good spirits (or good jinn) who visit can be protective and no source of anxiety.  But again, paranormal is paranormal.  Facing the unseen in flesh and blood is not easy.  When we pass away and become spirits ourselves, then of course it will be a different story and won't feel this way.

Amazing one Sister Zeynab!  I'm absolutely at a loss for any answers.  I too am familiar with such fan regulators.  In our present home we have regulators quite similar to this one as shown, not identical, but quite similar and yes, the handle is pretty firm.  No way can it move or change by itself.  I too think it sounds like a good spirit.  It didn't mean to startle or frighten you but to make you more comfortable.   Did any such similar incident happen again in that house?

Thanks.  I'm happy to know that all of you found this true story interesting.

I myself thought many times it must have been a nice spirit.

@ Sis Heba.  And no, I never felt the presence of anyone around, not then nor at any other time after that.

@ Sister Ruhi and br. PT.  Yes, the electrician did open up that regulator box.  That's what took him about 10 minutes.  He said that he could see everything was fine with the regulator.  Obviously he was right because the fan worked perfectly after that day.  Yes, we had been in that house for a long time.  I was the last one to leave after my beloved father passed away.  But I lived alone in that house for almost 3 years after my father.  I never experienced anything unusual in that house except this incident.  But yeah, my brother had once mentioned of something weird in this same room.  Before he left for abroad, he was using this room as his bedroom while my father was using the master bedroom and  me, the room next to it at the other end of the house (which were being renovated when I moved here temporarily, alone).  My brother was studying late at night for his exams.  He kept the bedroom door closed but not locked.  Quite late, around midnight or 1 a.m., he heard a clear loud knock at the door.  He said he had a weird feeling on hearing it.  He mentioned that he somehow knew it wasn't my father or me knocking.  Had it been one of us, we wouldn't knock at that late hour.  We would simply turn the door open and come in.  So he didn't answer the door and instead locked it.  Then it was all quiet.  After a few minutes my brother switched off the lights and went to bed.  Next morning he asked us if any of us had knocked at his door after midnight.  We said "NO."   Again, no answers on this little mystery until today   :)

So that means this particular room was a somewhat problematic one.  Not just you, but your brother too had a strange experience with no answers.  What makes it different is that it strikes me that apparently it's possible for paranormal activities to take place only in a certain portion of a house or a certain room .. not necessarily the entire house as we often learn about.

Yes sis .. that's correct.  It was only this room where a couple of very inexplicable incidents took place.   I agree with your point.   It's likely that paranormal activities can be restricted to certain portions of a house .... especially in big houses like the one we had.

Oh !!

I guess your family must have had at least one or two full time servants in that very large house.  Was any servant at that time given a place to sleep inside the house.  In that case, maybe he knocked to say something?  But of course that's unlikely.

Oh no .. not at all sister Ruhi.  The servants' quarters was separate from the house.   Servants slept there at night.  We never allowed any servants sleep inside the main house at night.  After dinner and cleaning up the kitchen, the cook and the servant would leave and the kitchen door would be locked by us from inside.  We would open it next morning for them to come and prepare breakfast.

hummm .. I understand.  I thought so.

This one also sounds very inexplicable.
