Walaikum Salaam and hi sis!  :)    Interesting !!   :D

You could be right that the term Daleem is derived from Dalcha or Dalya.  Most dishes cooked with lentils (dal in Urdu) derive the name "dalcha."  And "dalya" is the term given to foods with a semi-solid consistency, if I'm not mistaken.  These terms originate from Urdu as far as my knowledge goes.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

From whatever I've researched, the name Haleem given to the same dalcha or dalya-like dish is not derived from Daleem.  I think it's more independent.  I have heard that the Arabic word Haleem given to this dalcha-like dish comes from Arab countries and Iran, in addition to South Asia as well.  It has its variations in different societies.  The Arabs might cook it a bit differently from the Iranians and the Iranians might prepare it a little differently from the Pakistanis.  The Arabs also call it Harissa, a dish very similar to what we call Haleem.  But in all communities Haleem (or Harissa) is the name given to a slow-cooking dish with a thick paste-like consistency .. the basic ingredients being meat, lentils, barley and wheat seasoned with traditional spices which are different in every society.  But how or why the name "Haleem" was given to this particular kind of food is something not known to me.

I first thought that Haleem is only cooked in Muharram by Pakistani and Indian Shiia Muslims.  But my mother told me that Haleem is also a Muharram tradition in Iran.  In fact, I know of both Shiias and Sunnis who also cook Haleem in Ramadan.

According to a story which I've heard from some Pakistanis, cooking Haleem during 10th Muharram originated from Iraq.  It is said that when the Kufan Army left Kerbala with the surviving members of Imam Hussein's family as captives, the local tribes gathered and buried the shuhada.   Then they cooked a food of different grains with meat (similar to Haleem or Harissa) for themselves. That's how they say the tradition of preparing Haleem on 10th Muharram came about.  This might be true, but only Allah can confirm it.

Nowadays the animosity between Sunnis and Shiias has deepened so much that cooking Haleem during Muharram has become another point of contention in the Muslim community.  The hardline Salafists prohibit Muslims from cooking Haleem and claim that Muslims should be fasting on that day.  They don't even agree to the idea of eating Haleem during Iftar on Muharram 10th.  With them it's pure stubbornness giving them another lame excuse to fight.

I see .... I never knew this.  I went through this thread with wrapped attention.  Thanks my sisters for the great question and great answer.  It's always a very positive move to keep oneself acquainted with all such details.

Yes .... very, very interesting :)    You're right, presently the idea of cooking Haleem also indicates the differences between the method the Sunnis and Shiias observe Muharram 10th.  While the Sunnis fast on the basis of some utterly false Ahadith narrated Abu Huraira, the Shiias opt to cook and distribute food along with water or sherbeth.

However, I can understand about putting up sabeels and distributing water or cool drinks, especially when Muharram comes on the summer months.  That has a sentimental cause and indicates the unforgettable feelings of Muslims for the suffering which Hussein's family endured during that period.

I've watched some tough brawls perpetrated by macho salafists on  internet discussion boards fighting their kind of 'jihad' on discrediting the idea of cooking Haleem.  LOL  :D   .... these guys are crazy.  They complacently indulge in all kinds of un-Islamic practices flatly disallowed in the Noble Quran, but quarrel their hearts out over cooking a particular food on a particular day.

That's right.

Concerning the term 'Daleem'  ..... maybe it's a Pakistani construction of a combination of the words 'Haleem' and 'Dalcha' to give it a more locally original touch, socially.

Hummm, that's quite possible.

salamem  dear sisters thanks all of u  :D

interesting bunch of thanks sister ruhi ohh that's very informative wonderful research i didn't hear this story either :o seriously ummah is gone made in such bidah's & stories..shukar Alhamdulillah abu huraira did not narrate cooking recipes.i would say ummah lost the very basics in bidah so they did not bother to look what they naming the food  :-\

very appreciating answer right daleem is sound more wried & dalya like dal dalya making lots of sense.pakistani touch is possible with naming it.

hmm one word has several meanings and ur spelling is same it's  Haleem with double ''EE '' so right spelling is Haleem for food name ..

Quran roman arabic it's ḥalīmun with  ' I ' not double ''ee''

food name is haleem  NOt halim or Al Halim and nothing to do with the attribute name of Allah it's talking in a different context and by no means of disrespect to one of the names of Allah..right ??

and acording to this thinking it would be difficult for muslims to naming a child  from asma ul husna الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ because muslims do named but do not Add  ''Al'' like simply momin not Al momin ,rehman not Al Rehman.. it's like that ??? am i right ???

yes u are right putting up sabeel is really good  otherwise normally they like to drink each other's blood...

Quran roman arabic it's ḥalīmun with  ' I ' not double ''ee''

That's a good point.  It never struck me before.  I am not sure if the food name "haleem" is purposely spelled with double "ee" to distinguish the word from Asma-al-Husna (The most beautiful names of Allah) "halimun."   You could be right here.

food name is haleem  NOt halim or Al Halim and nothing to do with the attribute name of Allah it's talking in a different context and by no means of disrespect to one of the names of Allah..right ??

Yes exactly.  Like I said, I'm not sure if the spellings have been made different for this purpose of separating the 2 meanings of the same word.  However, it's obvious that the food name "haleem" (no matter how it is spelled) has no connotations with "halimun" referring to Asma-al-Husna.

and acording to this thinking it would be difficult for muslims to naming a child  from asma ul husna الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ because muslims do named but do not Add  ''Al'' like simply momin not Al momin ,rehman not Al Rehman.. it's like that ??? am i right ???

That's another good point.  As you can see, I've found a list of Asma-al-Husna HERE. (http://sufism.org/foundations/ninety-nine-names/the-most-beautiful-names-of-allah-2)   Though not all, but quite a few names from here are selected for Muslim children.

As far as I know, according to rules of Arabic language, the term "al" or "ar" or "az" (depending on the sound of the main word) before many proper nouns and common nouns denote the term "the" as in english.

"al" in Arabic is a function word or harf termed as "particle" in English which does not belong to any grammatical word classes such as nouns, verbs, adjectives etc.   The function of "al" is to render the noun to which it is prefixed more definite in its depiction as a word.  For example, the word كتاب or kitāb "book."  Putting a prefix would make it الكتاب or al-kitāb "the book."  As I said, al- is typically translated as "the" in English.  The term al-Kitab is generally used to denote the Quran.  But as you would know, there are many other words prefixed with "al" that denote names of things or names of people  (common nouns as well as and proper nouns) in our everyday life.  For instance, in the Noble Quran there is a Surah named Al-Muminun (23rd Surah).  This denotes "The believers" which means it refers to pious human beings who believe in Allah.  In grammar this would belong to the common noun category.

Therefore, when "al" is put before any word from the list of Asma-al-Husna denoting the beautiful names of Allah, the purpose of adding "al" is only to enhance the definition of that word and clarify its meaning according to the rules of Arabic grammar.   This is the way I see it.

yes u are right putting up sabeel is really good  otherwise normally they like to drink each other's blood...

lol .. right :D
