Title: Want to know the exact family relationship between Imam Hussein and Abbas
Post by: Ruhi_Rose on November 26, 2012, 12:43:37 am
Salam Alaykum folks.  Sorry, I'm a bit confused.  Is Hazrat Abbas the first cousin of Imam Hussein?  An accurate clarification will be much appreciated.  Need to know it cause Abbas's name comes very often in the incident of Karbala.  Thanks!

No sis, the name Abbas in connection with the tragic event of Karbala was not Imam Hussein's cousin.  He was Imam Hussein's half brother.   He is also given the title of Alamdar-e-lashkar-e-Hussain (flag bearer of the army of Hussein).  Imam Ali bin Talib had 2 wives - Fatima Zahra (daughter of the Prophet) and Fatima bin Huzzam.  He married Fatima Huzzam after the death of Fatima Zahra and they had 4 sons - Abbas, Jafar, Usman and Abdallah.   Reports on history mention that she was a very kind stepmother to the children of Fatima Zahra - Hassan, Hussein, Zainab and Kulsoom.  It's also reported that Imam Hussein and all his siblings were very close to their half brothers .. and that Hussein was especially very attached to his brother Abbas.  To put it briefly, the children of Ali bin Talib from Fatima Zahra and Fatima Huzzam made up a very close-knit family.  Thus when Imam Hussein decided to visit Kufa, his half brothers went along with him.

Ow!  Okay ..... many thanks sis.  It's very touching how loyally Abbas takes up for his brother Hussein in the battlefield of Karbala.  MashAllah, a close-knit is yet another sign of piety, tenderness and mutual love between family members.  I did know that Imam Ali bin Abu Talib's second wife was also named Fatima.  I also heard that he never took another wife in the lifetime of Fatima Zahra because she felt she wasn't cut-out to be a co-wife and before her marrige to Ali, her family viz. the Prophet (pbuh) negotiated this issue with Ali and Ali gave his consent & promise that he wouldn't marry anyone else as long as Fatima Zahra was his wife.  Whether or not it's true, the actual events do conform with it, in that,  Ali never took another wife during Fatima Zahra's lifetime so we can take that report as correct.

Yes, altogether Imam Ali had 8 children - Hassan, Zainab, Hussein and Kulsoom from Fatima Zahra (daughter of the Prophet pbuh).  And Abbas, Jafar, Osman and Abdullah from Fatima Huzzam whom he married after the death of Fatima Zahra.

From all accounts, I'm sure that Abbas, Hussein's younger half-brother, was definitely with him during the incident of Karbala and was martyred by the enemies before Hussein.  According to historical reports, the other 3 sons of Fatima bint Huzzam were at Karbala and most likely they were also martyred.  But I don't know the details.

It's very hard to say who is from the generation of whom biologically.  There's no evidence nor any proof of that.  But that's not important in the Sight of Allah.  No matter which lineage or family we belong to, what's important is to be a believer with good conduct.   When Shiias talk of Ahl-e-Bayt, they apparently refer to the lineage of Fatima Zahra and Ali.  However, all Shiias I've known, including some Sunnis, also have a lot of respect for Abbas bin Ali.   Abbas was also connected with the Prophet's family through Ali being the Prophet's first cousin.  But of course, the Ahl-e-Bayt lineage of Imam Hussein was a lot closer and more direct. However, like I always hold .... it's not the family lineage that matters.  It's the strength of iman, niyyah and behavior that Allah sees to. The reason I look upon as both Hussein and Abbas as great men is because of their Faith & conduct, not family lineage.
