Title: Does vomiting break the fast?
Post by: N. Truth Seeker on July 05, 2015, 03:13:02 am
As-Salam Alaykum.   Does vomiting really break the fast?  Keep hearing this from many.  Your opinion please folks.

Walaikum As-Salam brother TS.  It could break your fast only if it's intentional, like supposing you're feeling very nauseous and ill and you think trying to vomit out whatever is making you feel sick would probably make you feel better.  In that case it would break your fast simply because it means you are definitely unwell .. at least for the day .. and since fasting is meant for those who are healthy therefore your fast could become void in the Sight of Allah.  But if you happen to vomit accidentally during a bout of coughing or clearing your throat but otherwise you aren't ill, then it won't break.  That's the way I see it.  A lot depends upon individual intentions here, hence Allah is the Best Judge in each case.  But certainly I won't say that every case of vomiting automatically breaks the fast as commonly presume.

I pray and hope no one is sick in your family brother .......

Perfectly viewed Sister, that's the way I see it too.

I pray and hope no one is sick in your family brother .......

Haa haha  .. no Sister.  Alhumdulilah, everyone is fine and Ramadan going wonderfully. And thanks for your concern.  Just asked this question as the topic came up with some of our clients at the office and my brother, cousin and me.  We told them much the same thing as you explained.  They were as usual generalizing that every bit of vomit breaks the fast.

Some muftis and "scholars" also claim vomiting invalidates the wudu like the fart issue.  What would you guys say ?

:D  ;D That too sounds an interesting query.  InshAllah, I'll mention my opinion later this morning or afternoon cause it's almost time for sahoor now.

Now coming to Sister Ruhi's query.

Vomiting would only break your wudu if you vomit on yourself, polluting your clothes and person.  Otherwise why would it break the wudu?  If you're careful enough to rush to the washroom and vomit into the toilet, or even if you accidentally vomit anywhere without making it fall or spill on yourself then there's no reason for wudu to break.  However, needless to say you need to clean up the place very well.  If you vomit on the place where you pray, needs to be cleaned thoroughly.  If it falls on the prayer mat, put it in the washing machine.  So I would say, not all kinds of vomiting break the wudu.  And fart is far more harmless than vomiting.  It never breaks the wudu.  The reason has already been discussed. Wa'salam Sis.  Exactly.  Some clerics also keep bellowing that bleeding break wudu.  Not mentruation, just bleeding from an injury .. like if you cut yourself while going about your chores at home.  This also makes no sense to me, no more than disallowing menstruating women to offer prayer or fasting.

Yeah, I see it the same way Sis.  But these guys have really made this very simple issue laughably complex.  Shafi madhab says blood is "najis" or dirty/impurity but it doesn't break wudu.  Just clean it up.  Well, obviously if someone bleeds and it falls on the floor or sink, it has to be cleaned.  So Shafi never said anything brilliant but at least it has the sense not to claim bleeding breaks wudu.  But the Hanafi mathhab claims if the blood leaves comes out of a wound anywhere on the body  then the wudu breaks.  Complete idiocy.  Just ignore.  Then again, there are other sets of bokhraats who claim that if blood appears on a wound and does not ooze out then wudu won't break.   But if it flows out, then wudu will break.  They have no sensible reasons to back up such declarations other than the usual "najis" issue.  So it's best to ignore them.  Let them babble.  Just use your common sense to handle such matters.

Absolutely right.  Agree Sister.   Common sense is a gift from Allah.  But the Ummah loves to make it uncommon  ;D

Just got reminded of something.  Would bleeding ... e.g. bleeding of the gums, or lips or nose break the fast?  I know it wouldn't.  But mentioning it for info because it boiled into a heated debate 3 or 4 years ago at our Masjid's community center.   I strongly "voted" NO  :)  It's unintentional, right?  Even if a little of the bleeding goes inside your stomach, it's unintentional.  No one would do that on purpose.  Secondly, it's the natural fluid of one's own system that's already within and getting back inside the same system.  So it makes no sense to claim such bleeding invalidates the fast.

Right on sister.  I couldn't have said it more logically.  A big "NO" vote from me too ....  :)
