Title: The aspect of time span in the Noble Quran
Post by: N. Truth Seeker on July 02, 2016, 01:30:21 pm
 BismEm

As-Salam Alaykum.

Always keep pace with the duration of years indicated in various Quranic narrations.  When Allah says  HE destroyed the disobedient ones or bore with them and eventually made them pay for their disbelief, this doesn't mean it happened within days or weeks or even some years.  Usually when a community is given a chance by HIM to perceive and grasp HIS guidance, the span of time could be anything between a couple of generations to several generations.  In other words, hundreds of years or thousands.  Not to forget, time is naught with Allah for HE is the Everlasting.  While hundreds or thousands or millions of years for us is too lengthy a period to envisage or contemplate, for Allah it's just a twinkling of an eye.

Take the example of Verse 40:5 below from Surah Al-Mumin.

"The folk of Noah and the factions after them denied (their messengers) before these, and every nation purposed to seize their messenger and argued falsely, (thinking) thereby to refute the Truth. Then I seized them, and how (awful) was My punishment."

Allah Almighty traces the course of generations starting from Prophet Noah, the messengers and their communities that came after Noah up to the Arabian society in the 7th century at the time of Prophet Muhammad.  A cursory reader might not pay attention to this very relevant fact of an extremely lengthy duration of time alluded in this Verse which could stretch as much as 5,000 years or more from Prophet Noah to Prophet Muhammad (peace be on them all).  Realization of this aspect will help us to be pragmatic and patient with a much clearer understanding of the fact of matters.

True, true.  It's something people tend to overlook.  Consequently we hear too many folks arguing about a system of a society of the distant past from the standpoint of the present system they're living in.  It's a sign of limited thoughts from a limited mind.

Also when Allah says to the guilty in the Quran that He can easily replace them with better folks, it doesn't mean happening within a few days or years.  It's a process which if He decides to implement, will be spread over for generations, giving everyone a chance to prove their iman and the worth of their conduct.  And annihilation of a community may take place after several centuries or more when it's absolutely obvious that that community has gone astray beyond redemption.

Thank you brother TS.

MashAllah, nice thoughts for reading.  Actually the confusion arises in the minds of people because they are unable to envisage the reality of the expanse of time, what it means in the ordinance of Allah Who is Ever-Lasting, compared to the infinity of long stretches of time from the viewpoint of humans who are mortal with a life span of only so many years.  Because of that, humans also have a tendency of being hasty, in that, they expect everything to happen before their eyes and in their lifetimes.  Thus they end up misunderstanding Quranic Verses, presuming that such destructions are not real.  May Allah Almighty awaken the unthinking minds.
