Title: Segregation in the Quran
Post by: DannyT on October 03, 2016, 09:31:30 am
Salaam all
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about gender segregation in light if the Quran (if Allah does command it)  and also shed some light on lowering the gaze and whether lowering the gaze was meant to be a literal interpretation.

Jzk and salamun dear believer sisters and brothers.

Walaikum Salaam brother.

Quran does not say anything on gender segregation, which means that both genders can be present in gatherings together without forgetting the rules of decency and respect for each other.  However, sometimes on certain occasions gender segregation maybe be a good idea from the view point of a social system for better security of women.  I suppose this is particularly true in today's world where sexual harassment, catcalling, groping etc. aren't uncommon in crowded assemblies and in most cases the law is too lenient to apprehend such culprits.  But gender segregation is not a Quranic rule.

About lowering the gaze ....

"Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and be modest. That is purer for them. Lo! Allah is aware of what they do." 24:30.

"And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms,"  24:31.

Lowering the gaze as instructed to both genders refers to refraining from staring in a way that may insinuate sexual attraction as is typical to gaze at the opposite gender.  It's about decency and respect for one another.  Some commentators misinterpret this as not making eye-contact with the opposite gender while talking or discussing.  That's not correct.  I disagree.   As long as the gathering or meeting is decent and intentions are clean, there's absolutely nothing wrong making eye contact while talking.  Speaking by making eye contact is natural of humans.  In respectable and agreeable environments it may even seem rude talking to a person while looking in some other direction.

Jzk for that sis Z
Yes I get very rude looks from women when I look away and talk, it is very rude actually but I can't speak my intention out blatantly but thankfully Muslim women do understand.
I read on a Quran alone website that lowering your gaze actually means humbling yourself in front of the woman but it didn't make sense. If I find the link again I'll post it.

Jzk sis Z and salamun Alaikum
