Title: How to answer non Muslims when they bring up verse 5:33
Post by: DannyT on October 06, 2016, 05:02:22 am
Salaam all
This is a usual question I get from most non Muslim colleagues and I have seen two interpretations of the verse.  One is very aptly explained by bilal Phillips on YouTube which  makes sense. The second is interpreted as cut off resources, not hand.
I personally ignore these type of verses because it doesn't serve any purpose in my worship. However when I get asked these questions i find it very hard  to concentrate the conversation on the 1000s of other beautiful verses in the Quran and the focus becomes a few verses that come across as barbaric. It always seems like non Muslims pick these verses to prove they can't come from a peaceful merciful God whilst ignoring all the others that has some or most relevance to them. However I would like some sort of answer I can give to non Muslims which  can prove or perhaps show them that these verses are from God albeit being as truthful as possible.  Jzk and Salaam.

Walaikum Salaam.  I understand you brother but nothing to worry about. We had discussed that topic 5 years ago in detail here at MV.   I'm giving you the link so you can read it.  It's not a law nor any rule nor a practical command.  It's basically a symbolic or metaphorically premonition conveyed to the Israelites by alluding to the practice earlier as during the Pharaoh's reign.  You're right non-Muslims are quick to pick on it because their 'strategy to attack' is based on picking Verses out of context by ignoring the background discussion of Verses.

Elucidating Verse 33 of Surah Al-Maidah which is often misunderstood  (http://muslimvilla.smfforfree.com/index.php?topic=3194.0)

You can respond to it there, if you so desire, as it will help us to de-fragmentize similar topics in our forum for readers' convenience :)
Thanks.

We don't meddle with traditional sites on such topics and prefer to do our own research.  You can check our following links:

"Origin of the name "Ramadan" and the 4 sacred months" (http://muslimvilla.smfforfree.com/index.php?topic=2650.0)
4 sacred months given as the second sub-topic in this link, scroll down for it please.

I'm not sure if by "Muharram" you want to know about the first Islamic month or it's link with the incident of Karbala.  Muharram is simply the first lunar Hijri month in the Hijri calendar which been explained in the above post.  To know its link with Karbala you can check the following post and scroll down to find the link on battle/tragedy of Karbala in the month of Muharram.
"Emergence of Ommayads & the destruction of Islamic values | Karbala" (http://muslimvilla.smfforfree.com/index.php?topic=3142.0)
 ..... and scroll down.

For comments, if you have any, would appreciate much if you visited the above links as we're trying to keep similar topics in the same thread ,, as far as possible.

Jzk Brother N
I was wondering about the month of Muharram (not the karbala incident) and is it the holiest of the 4 sacred months?  Some Muslims call it the month of Allah.
From a Quranic view does Allah say we should fast or pray more etc in this month more than others (except ramadhan of course)
Jzk I'll read the links provided

It's traditionally referred to as one of the 4 sacred months .. and is certainly the first month of the Islamic calendar.  I would suggest read the link given above on the subject of 4 sacred months for relevant facts & details.

Some Muslims call it the month of Allah.

Wouldn't know nor confirm cause Allah has not said that in His Message.

Allah does not make any such references in the Quran except that additional prayers are always a plus for the soul.  And nafl fasting can be done any time in the year if one desires which also carries much blessings.  But obligatory fasting as categorically instructed by Allah is only in Ramadan.  The only month mentioned by name in the Quran is Ramadan.

In case you don't know the somewhat tricky story that takes its origin from Hadith on fasting in 9th and 10th of Muharram, why?  Please read it.  It's really important to know this lest unsuspecting folks fall prey to falsehood.  Many naive minds have been duped with the pathetically wrong info in that hadith.   Sister Zeynab did plenty of painstaking research with much evidence to expose it.

Did the Prophet (SAAW) fast on 10th Muharram? (http://muslimvilla.smfforfree.com/index.php?topic=2313.msg11237#msg11237) (@ MV).

Did the Prophet (S) fast on the 10th of Muharram? (http://zainabslounge.blogspot.ca/2010/11/did-prophet-s-fast-on-10th-of-muharram.html)  (@ Blog)

I saw a post recently saying fast day before ashura, and ashura and if you can't fast day before ashura then fast day after ashura.
