Title: Praying while lying down or sitting (Surah Al-Imran V.3:191)

BismEm

“[And] who remember God standing, sitting and lying down, and [thus] reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: "Our Lord! You have not created all this without purpose. You are limitless in Glory! Protect us from the torment of Fire.” (Qur’an: 3: 191).

Alhumdulilah.  This Verse makes it abundantly clear that those sisters and brothers who, because of physical disability or poor health, are unable to offer salat in the prescribed manner can definitely offer prayer and remember Allah Almighty either sitting on a chair or lying down.

On this topic, one of our Muslim scholars said while answering a question, quote:  "We are to pray while lying down only when we are suffering from a disease that makes us virtually bed-ridden and unable to stand or sit.  Having said this, let me also point out, if we are not able to pray in the prescribed manner we can still practice dhikr and Du’a lying down on our sides."

Yes indeed, if a person is completely invalid or bedridden, they can of course offer salat and zikr in bed, not necessarily lying on their sides, they can offer prayer or zikr just as well lying on their backs.   However, this does not only apply in extreme cases of illnesses as described by this 'scholar.'   You may not exactly be an invalid nor bedridden, yet be unable enough to sit on a prayer mat and offer salat.  A person may be suffering from sensitive back problems like severe sciatica pain, profound slipped disc or disc degeneration pain, severe knee pain with acute stiffness etc.  These are chronic conditions and can make it next to impossible for a person to use a prayer mat in the prescribed manner.   Then again, what about those suffering from cancers and multiple sclerosis and so many other illness that leave the body frail, exhausted, when one is not yet bedridden but ill enough not to lead a normal life?    The sheikh hasn't taken into consideration so many conditions.  Of course those with common sense will observe his oversight.  But those who take the words of these scholars and sheikhs as law will only end up making their lives difficult.  The rigidity of many of our scholars can discourage a lot of such ailing people from offering their prayers altogether.   They may not be able to sit on a prayer mat comfortably because of their condition, yet they may take for granted that according to 'scholarly instruction' they aren't unwell enough to offer salat and zikr in a chair or bed either.

A very common presumption of many of our scholars is that if they don't display rigidity in their advise, the people will take things too easy and deviate.  The reality is the opposite.  They have often taken people away from the path of Allah by their needless austere instructions.

Yeah, and no one actually heeds their austere instructions.  For example, just about all our masjids have some chairs placed behind the jammat in two groups for sisters and brothers separately.   At least 25 or 30 people offer their salat sitting on these chairs.  They aren't bedridden, but it's just very hard for them to sit on the prayer mat because of some chronic problem or another.
