Title: Opinion on residing in Hellfire temporarily
Post by: Ruhi_Rose on February 21, 2021, 07:24:12 am

Salams everyone.

From where did the idea get into the minds of some of our scholars presuming that those who are assigned Hellfire on the Day of Judgment will bear the torment for a certain number of days and then will be released from Hellfire and brought into Jannah?   Please enlighten me with your feedback dear folks.   This opinion leaves me perplexed as the Noble Quran makes no such assertions.

Wa'salam Sis Ruhi.    Some of them derive this concept by misunderstanding Verses 11:106-108 of Surah Hud.  Alhumdulilah, we also discussed these Verses several years ago, if you recall titled V.11:106-108 "save for that which your Rab wills" - (Surah Hud). (http://muslimvilla.smfforfree.com/index.php?topic=1548.0)

"As for those who will be wretched (on that day) they will be in the Fire;  sighing and wailing will be their portion therein, Abiding there so long as the heavens and the earth endure save for that which your Rab wills.  Indeed!  your Lord is Doer of what He will."    V.11:106-107  Hud.

"And as for those who will be glad (that day) they will be in the Garden, abiding there so long as the heavens and the earth endure save for that which your Rab wills:  a gift unfailing."   11:108  Hud.

In my opinion "so long as the heavens and the earth endure .."  means as long as the heavens and the earth last.

"save for that which your Rab wills."  is a pronouncement indicating that Allah Almighty has complete power to do whatever He wills or decides.

If He wants He can destroy the heavens and the earth and the entire universe any time He wills.  Similarly if He wants He can remove anyone He pleases from Hellfire or Jannah.  This is simply a manner of expression declaring and confirming the Supreme power of Allah Almighty to do as pleases Him.   These Verses are not supposed to be a confirmation that the residency of some folks in Hellfire nor Jannah will be temporary.

Walaykom AsSalam.

Who said Hellfire will be temporary?

In our zoom meeting a sister was discussing this aspect with the so-called ustadah and then they concluded "after making the wrong doer taste sufficient punishment for a specific length of time, they will then be removed from Hellfire" with the presumption that the person will be brought to a much better place which is obviously Jannat or maybe some lower grade of Jannat .. whatever, even the lowest grade of Jannat will be millions of times better than any grade of Hellfire.   During their discussion, they never referred to any Quranic Verses, not even to Verses 106 to 108 of Surah Hud.

I see.   I think Sister Heba is right.  The notion arises from a profound misunderstanding of the Verses quoted.  Moreover, this notion is more commonly circulated by Muslim scholars located in the West to match the Christian view of downplaying Hellfire.   As you know, in altered Christianity, there is no such thing as Hellfire .. as if everyone, whether righteous or unrighteous or in between, will all be destined to Paradise.

Also some Muslims who have been disobedient to the Will of Allah, or some Muslims who have misguided children or grandchildren and they cannot do anything to change that, prefer to presume that punishment in Hellfire will be temporary.  It gives them more ease and peace.  But they forget that acquiring 'peace' by overlooking the facts asserted in the Quran and replacing that with guesswork is pointless.

As explained by A. A. Maududi, it means the opposite of what they may presume.   When Allah Almighty asserts His Supreme Power, it "emphasizes that there is no power that can deliver them from that everlasting torment.  Of course, Allah has complete power to forgive anyone He wills or to make a change in the term of the torment for anyone, for He Himself establishes the laws and there is no law higher than His Law so as to limit His powers."   The guilty will dwell in Hellfire because of His wrath and the righteous will dwell in Paradise because of His favor.  And Allah has total power to make changes in their situation, IF He wills.   It is not an assertion that the guilty will be reprieved and sent to Paradise after a while.

That again is a fine commentary.  Makes complete sense with consistency in regard to Quranic values.  Alhumdulilah.
