It happened recently in Egypt where a donkey was imprisoned for a while for stealing food, corn on the cob.

But before reading the story, check this pic.  It's indeed extremely sad that animals are treated this way in certain parts of the world.  Children from a young age should be taught to respect the rights of animals, so that they realize that animals too are living beings who feel pain and exhaustion like humans.  In this picture, a poor donkey is overloaded with agricultural produce.  Additionally, the young boy sits on top of the greens, oblivious of the hardships being faced by the little animal that's been given a task far beyond its capacity.

Lovely cute lil donkey

Egypt donkey jailed for theft

CAIRO (AFP) - An Egyptian donkey has been jailed for stealing corn on the cob from a field belonging to an agricultural research institute in the Nile Delta, local media reported on Thursday.

The donkey and its owner were apprehended at a police checkpoint that had been set up after the institute's director complained that someone was stealing his crops, the state-owned Al-Ahram daily said.

The unnamed ungulate was found in possession of the institute's corn and a local judge sentenced him to 24 hours in prison. The man who had his donkey thrown in jail got off with a fine of 50 Egyptian pounds (nine dollars, six euros).

I didn't know they were so stupid and crazy in Mubarak's Egypt.

As someone said in the talkback:
"I wonder who the lucky inmate is who gets to share a cell with this magnificent beast."

Such treatment of animals really upset me a lot.  And donkeys are so often targetted with this scourge of carrying loads that are often twice the size of the poor animal.  It's absolutely heart-breaking.  I once saw back in my country of origin .. so much stuff was put on a donkey cart pulled by a single little donkey that when the cart stood still the animal got lifted in the air by the weight of the goods in the cart.  It just made me cry.

It's strange to read that Egypt jails a donkey for "stealing" corn while the Egyptian president is the biggest thief who steals millions of dollars every year.

Thanks for this post, sister cat.  Salaams to you Smiley
