Reflections on the Glorious Qur'an

" .... the faith of your father Abraham (is yours). He hath named you Muslims of old time and in this (Scripture), that the messenger may be a witness against you, and that ye may be witnesses against mankind. ...."  (22:78 Surah Al-Hajj)

As we know, the term "Muslim" means those who believe in One God and have surrendered to Him alone.  Furthermore, the above verse clearly indicates that "Muslim" was a term given to believers of monotheism since ancient times, from the days of Prophets Abraham uptil the period of Muhammad (peace be on them).

Thus, the word "Muslim" as elucidated in the Glorious Qur'an is reflected more as a common noun than a proper noun.  Unfortunately at present, most so-called Muslims have misconstrued this meaning.  They simply give the label of "Muslim" to anyone who is born in a family that's officially known as a "Muslim family" regardless of their thoughts and practices.  Non-Muslims, on the other hand, make their own kind of blunder.  They think that 'Muslims' and 'Islam' sprung up suddenly out of nowhere in 7th century Arabia.  These non-Muslim critics have no idea of the strong connection of the Divine Message given to Prophet Muhammad' (pbuh) with the same Divine Messages given to all his predecessors.  Similarly, the Kaa'ba at Mekkah also stood there since Prophet Abraham's (pbuh) time.  But after Prophet Abraham passed away, people gradually and steadily corrupted and altered the true monotheistic Faith and replaced it with polytheism.  Similarly, the filth of idols was also introduced in the Kaa'ba.  But through the Glorious Qur'an sent by Allah (The Most High) to the final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad (pbuh), Allah reconfirmed and revived the true monotheistic Faith.  And since the Qur'an delivered to this world will always remain intact, therefore the disbelievers will have no excuse for their disbelief in the Hereafter.  And hence, the final Prophet and Messenger will himself be a witness against them and so will the believers.

Very essential information.  Thus, the followers of all former Prophets were also Muslims in the sight of Allah and were called Muslims or those who had surrendered to Allah alone.  Similarly the followers of the Quran (the Final Divine Message) are also called Muslims.  Prophet Muhammad (SAW) will be a witness that he delivered Allah's Message to mankind, and those of mankind who follow the Quran will be witnesses against others who neglected it on the Day of Judgment.
