While I fully believe in the existnce of the paranormal (jinn), there are also times when the extent of our certainty about something can actually make our minds perceive it, even if it's not there in reality.  I'll share a story with everyone to explain what I mean.  This was told to me by my mother.  It happened with her best friend in their college days.

My mother's best friend 'B' had a younger sister 'N.'   N was horrified of the paranormal.  Even fairy tale stories about the paranormal scared her.  Her unusual fear became a joke with her siblings.  One day the siblings decided to play a prank.  N's older sister B and their brother 'K' told their part-time house maid, who used to come to clean their home for a couple of hours every morning, to come to the premises of their house the following midnight covered completely (from head down to the toes) in a large white sheet and stand underneath a big oak tree overlooking their living room.  They told the house maid that they would give her a handsome tip of money after the joke was carried out.  They also gave her a newly purchased white sheet to be used for the occasion.  She agreed.  B and K's idea was that as soon as they would see the house maid's appearance covered in white, they would call N and have some fun with her reaction.

The following morning when the house maid came to work, she was reminded about carrying out the joke.  She promised she would definitely do as told that midnight.

In the evening after dinner, B and K were monitoring every minute with a wide grin for the 'countdown' to midnght.  They were waiting to see the appearance of a figure draped in white under the oak tree in the garden opposite the living room.  Finally the clock struck almost midnight.  Both B and K hurried at the window of the living room facing the oak tree.  Sure enough, the house maid was there punctually at 12.00 a.m.  All they could see was a tall white figure under the tree standing quite still.  It looked really eerie in the quiet moonlit night, but not for B and K for they knew it was the house maid.  It was fun time for them.  They called N at the window who came rushing.  Of course she was scared like hell.  After a single glance at the white figure, N ran off to her mother's room and slept there.  B and K had a good laugh.  The house maid stood there for about 30 minutes.  Around 12.30 a.m., when B and K came to look out of the window, she had apparently left.  Well, the joke was over, B and K were hysterical and poor N had a bad evening.

The next morning when the house maid came as usual for work, B came to thank her and tip her with some money for her co-operation.  But before B could say anything, the house maid apologized profusely for not being able to come the previous night as promised.  She said that her baby boy was suddenly taken ill with high fever and she couldn't leave him so late at night.  She declined to take the money and also returned the white sheet which was still sealed in the plastic wrapper as it was when purchased from the store.

First B thought that the house maid was fooling.  But then, in an instant B knew that she was serious.  She actually didn't come.  Her child was really sick.  This was also confirmed by the other servants of the household that the part-time house maid nor anyone else had entered the premises of the compound the previous night.  So what was that white figure they saw under the oak tree around midnight?  On knowing this, B and K became a lot more frightened than N was the previous evening.  They thought and thought about it.  They told their parents of their intended joke and what the house maid said.  It became a mystery for the entire household and all their friends but no explanations were ever found as to what that white figure was.

My mother explained it as follows.  She said that most probably there was nothing paranormal in this story.  It seemingly happened because B and K had conditioned their minds thus, and as per the arrangement of the joke were so convinced that they would see the house maid draped in white under the oak tree at midnight, that it was this frame of their minds that made them see it .. even though in reality there was nothing there.

And only Allah knows best ..

Yes, i get the point.  Your mom was right.  You see, if you have something solidly engraved in your mind, it will seem to you that way and make you look past the reality.  In other words it's psycho-somatic as they call it.  Thanks for sharing Sister.  This was an interesting one.

Hmmmm,

but there is a loophole.

it's possible that for still greater fun the housemaid double-crossed B and K. what's the proof that she was telling the truth when she said she didn't come?

This would mean a financial loss for the housemaid.  Remember, she was being offered money for playing the prank.  So it's unlikely she would lie about not coming unless she really didn't come.

another possiblilty is that the paranormal did exisit and tried to double cross everyone.  or let me put it this way.  it tried to help the prank players   teethsmile   The jinn knew the house maid was sick so the jinn said 'no problem, I'll take care of it.'  Cheesy Cheesy
