"And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess. It is a decree of Allah for you. Lawful unto you are all beyond those mentioned, so that ye seek them with your wealth in honest wedlock, not debauchery. And those of whom ye seek content (by marrying them), give unto them their portions as a duty. And there is no sin for you in what ye do by mutual agreement after the duty (hath been done). Lo! Allah is ever Knower, Wise." (4:24) An-Nisa

This is a very simple verse. Here's how I'd explain it. Believing men are not to have relationships with married women, neither are they to have relationships with free women out of wedlock. They can only legalise their relationship through a formal marriage for which it's necessary to provide a dowry to the bride. Of course, it's understood that there's no fixed amount for dowry .. the poor man should give according to his means and rich according to his. But some dowry (whatever it may include) is essential to complete the formality of marriage. However, in 7th century Arabia, slavery was rampant. Islam had its own approach to end slavery (for which please refer to article on Slavery) which didn't happen overnight. So during the period when slavery did exist, the slave women were lawful to their masters as their wives. But it's important to remember, this rule is not applicable any more because slavery does not exist in most parts of the world today. Thus, men cannot use this law to justify intimacy out of wedlock with free women.

I was surprised to learn that a so-called "ulema" Ibn Kathir has written the tafsir of this verse saying that it allows Muslim men to carry out temporary marriage. This is how people posing as "the learned ones" misinterpret the words of Allah only to satisfy their own repugnant desires. May Allah grant protection to the innocent ones from the misguidance of such misguided people.

Nowadays, temporary marriages are getting very common in Muslim communities. It's not just a Shiia practice as is wrongly assumed. Mutah, as temporary marriage among shiias is called, started with the shiia community. But today temporary marriages among sunnis (including salafs / wahabbis) is almost just as common.

Shiias = Mutah
Sunnis = Misyar, and in Egypt temporary sunni marriage = Urfi

Thus, mutah, misyar and urfi are all different names but exactly the same thing.

Temporary marriages have different durations. All rules regarding dowry, child custody, child support etc. are manipulated according to the convenience of the man. It's planned in a way to only provide pleasure to the man with the minimal of responsibilities. Needless to say, it's most shameful and thoroughly against the dictates of the Quraan. We can scan the Glorious Quraan from cover to cover, nowhere does the Quraan give the permission of temporary marriage .. not even in the remotest sense. Yet many "ulemas" try to justify it by intentionally misinterpreting the Quraan.

Ya Allah!  who is ibn kathir?  how could anyone misinterpret the Quran so much .. and then call himself "ulema" ?   taubah!  may Allah protect us from the evil minds of such ones.

Thanks for posting this sis, i'll send it around too.  people should be warned about such miscreants.

 salamem thanks for reading persian, cat. yes it is truly a bizarre interpretation. that's the right word for it. actually, as u can see, i've written this article. i wrote this after an indepth discussion with a shiia brother yesterday on Quraan and Hadeeth.

To highlight this part of our discussion, that brother was complaining that sunnis keep bashing shiias over their temporary marriage custom of mutah. but nowadays the same system has also started raising its head in sunni communities, and the sunnis conveniently ignore this. so in the course of our coversation he quoted this verse saying that he has studied the tafsir of Ibn Kathir of this verse, and ibn Kathir has interpreted it as temporary marriage. i was totally shocked and dumbstruck. i always knew the manipulative tactics of the so-called "ulemas" to satisfy their own dirty desires, but i didn't know they could go so far as clearly misinterpretating the Quraan (nauzbillah).

i will InshAllah try to contact that brother and ask him if he can give any references to that tafsir of ibn kathir. also try out a google search. it could give some results. i'll try it too.
