 BismEm

In the Qur'aan, Allah says that when you adopt a child, always disclose their true identity to them.

According to our perception, there are two reasons for this. First, the biological father of the child has the right that his child must carry his name and be known as his father's child. Secondly, it's important to disclose the child's biological identity to them in order to avoid incidents of incest in future. For example, if two children, brother and sister, are adopted in two different foster homes since infancy and their biological identity is completely hidden from them, it's possible that later in life they might meet, fall in love and get married or even end up in an arranged marriage .. not knowing the truth about their biological relationship.

To further highlight the importance of retaining one's father's name, Muslim women are not expected to change their family name after marriage. Marriage is no reason for a Muslim woman to give up her own father's name and take on her husband's name. Only their children are to take their father's name.

"Allah hath not assigned unto any man two hearts within his body, nor hath He made your wives whom ye declare (to be your mothers) your mothers, nor hath He made those whom ye claim (to be your sons) your sons. This is but a saying of your mouths. But Allah saith the truth and He showeth the way.

Proclaim their real parentage. That will be more equitable in the sight of Allah. And if ye know not their fathers, then (they are) your brethren in the faith, and your clients. And there is no sin for you in the mistakes that ye make unintentionally, but what your hearts purpose (that will be a sin for you). Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful." (33:4-5)
