Pedestrians be careful while cell-phoning and text messaging

On Wednesday night, March 25th, a cell-phone conversation cost a 28-year-old pedestrian her life.  She was trying to cross a busy street in downtown Toronto while engrossed talking on her cell-phone.  A truck was making a turn from the point she was crossing the road.  Because of the distraction caused by the cell phone conversation, she didn't realise and went too close to the truck and got crushed to death under its wheels.

Usually at such times when trucks or buses make a turn, their rear wheels often come right onto the sidewalks.  Thus, whenever you see a large vehicle making a turn while you are standing on the same corner of the sidewalk to cross, always wait and move right back on the sidewalk to stay far away from the encroaching hind wheels of the vehicle.  And always put away your cell phone while crossing the road.  Even the most important phone call can wait till you cross the road.

O no!    this sounds so very tragic.  The person on the other end of the cell phone who must have heard the accident over the phone must have got the shock of his or her life.  It's true that people do get very distracted while talking on cell phones.  It's been banned for drivers in most countries.  Now it should be banned for pedistrians while crossing the street.  I understand what must have happened here.  All heavy vehicles while turning do come over the corners of sidewalks. No one can help that.  We can't say that this was the driver's fault.  This is something which pedistrians have to watch out for.  Very sad story.

OMG!  what a heartbreaking tragedy for this lady's family.  Makes me wonder how a person can be so engrossed while talking on phone that they become unaware even of a huge delivery truck coming close enough to kill them .... unless one has a defective vision.
