Electrolux vacuum explodes, causing third-degree burns Yahoo! News 
VANCOUVER (CBC) - A woman is recovering from third-degree burns to her left palm after the cordless vacuum she was using to clean the stairs in her Richmond, B.C., home exploded in her hands earlier this week.
"I almost reached the third floor, and the vacuum explode all of a sudden," Fiona Du said. "My hand was the first thing to receive the explosion power."
The battery of the Electrolux vacuum expanded and burst without warning, creating a force so intense it reshaped the ring on her finger. The explosion also embedded a quarter-sized piece of the vacuum in the wall of Du's house.
"Nothing happened to my face and eyes, and that's really a miracle," Du said.
Electrolux Home Care Products issued a recall on several of its cordless stick vacuums on Thursday, four days after Du sustained her injuries. According to a news release issued by the Canadian subsidiary of the Illinois-based company, the recalled products were sold at Costco, Canadian Tire, the Bay and Sears stores.
Du was told by doctors that recovery from her burns can take up to a year.
Electrolux contacted Du to inform her the case has been referred to their insurance company. They also asked that she send the vacuum back to them.
She has no plans on doing that, though, as she is currently seeking legal advice.
The affected models were sold in Canada from November 2007 to March 2009. According to Electrolux, five incidents of damage to the vacuum and property have been reported in Canada and two reports of injuries surfaced in the U.S.
