 BismEm

This is one of the best tasting quick dinners.  It can also be taken as a snack.  Pita Pizza has variations.  It can be purely veggie or a mixture of veggie and meat or mince.  If you are interested in preparing it as a snack for children or for taking it out to picnics, it's better to use mini pita rounds.  Otherwise if prepared on large pitas, the results are just as fine.

You can use white pita or whole wheat.  I would certainly suggest whole wheat.

Some like to grill (or broil) it, while some prefer baking.  The choice is yours.  You only need to make sure that it's cooked until the cheese melts.

Try this out ..

Pita Pizza Rounds

Ingredients:

-  6 mini pita bread rounds, preferably whole wheat
-  1 can pizza sauce
-  Half cup chopped green bell pepper
-  Half cup cooked chicken pieces
-  2 cups shredded chedder or mozzarella cheese

Method:

If you prefer to bake it, preheat oven to 350F (180C).

Place the bread, hollow side up, on baking sheet.  Spread equal amounts of pizza sauce over the crusts.  Distribute chopped green bell pepper (or any other of your favorite pizza ingredients like tomatoes or green onions) equally over the crusts.  Top with chicken pieces and sprinkle shredded cheese over it.

Either broil (or grill) until the cheese melts, approximately for 5 minutes.  Or, bake until hot and bubbly, approximately for 10 to 12 minutes.  I prefer using the grill.

The same can also be made with large pitas. [/size]

In the meantime, I thought this was interesting ..

Pizza History
Adding toppings to baked flat bread can be traced as far back as the 6th century BC. In the early 1500's, the peasants of Naples began adding tomatoes to their yeast dough. That, along with olive oil, cheese and herbs made the meal. By the 17th century, pizza had gained popularity among visitors to Naples. Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba in Naples is believed to be the very first pizza tavern. Different sources say it opened anywhere between 1738 and 1830 - and it is still open today! In 1905, Gennaro Lombardi opened up a pizzeria in New York City. Lombardi's is believed to be the first pizzeria in North America and is still considered one of the best pizzerias in the US today.

Reading the history of pizza in greater detail says that in the early days toppings on baked bread were mainly cheese, veggies and dates.  Meat was almost never used.

o yeah!  this is fab.  I've made it quite a few times.  It's also great and very convenient to carry for picnics.  It's a real quick-fix snack dinner or lunch.
