 BismEm

"And (remember) when We said unto the angels: Fall prostrate before Adam, and they fell prostrate, all save Iblis. He was of the Jinn, so he rebelled against his Lord's command. Will you choose him and his seed for your protecting friends instead of Me, when they are an enemy unto you? Calamitous is the exchange for evil doers!"  18:50 Surah Al-Kahf

In the above verse it's clear that Shaytaan belonged to the category of Jinn.  Many interpreters also say that being a Jinn made Shaytaan different from other angels because since Shaytaan was of the Jinn, therefore he could choose his path of conduct like humans whether to obedient or disobedient to the commands of Allah Almighty.  And Shaytaan chose to be disobedient.

Some people say that previously Satan used to be of the angels.  I suppose this is a reference of being a fallen angel.   My question is, what's the source of this concept?

Shaitaan was of the jinn, NOT of the angels

Yes, I repeat your very correct interpretation.  In the above verse 18:50 it's clear that Satan (Iblis) belonged to the category of Jinn.   This makes it obvious that being a Jinn, Satan could choose his path of conduct (similar to other Jinn and humans) whether to be obedient or disobedient to the commands of Allah Almighty.  Satan chose to be disobedient and became an outcast.  This is Quranic information and a confirmed truth.

In non-Muslim circles there's the notion that Satan was formerly of the angels.  I am not sure to what extent the Hadith followers accept this story.  I say this because the Hadith literature has plenty in common with the various versions of the Bible and almost nothing in common with the Quran.  This idea of Satan being a 'fallen angel' is NOT from the Glorious Quran.  In the Quran there's no such concept as any angel being a 'fallen' one.   This tale comes entirely from the altered Bible.

Concerning the altered Old & New Testaments, there is no mention of Jinn in these books.  In all non-Muslim sources, Jinn or "jinnies" are only referred to fictional characters as those in myths and folklores.

In the absence of the concept of Jinn,  the Bible has woven a story of Satan as "fallen from heaven" creating the tale of Satan as a 'fallen angel.'   The most commonly quoted verse that refers to this concept is from Isaiah 14:12-14 which says:

Isaiah 14:12-14  -- "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: . . . I will be like the most High."

The Gospel started this gossip based on a pagan myth.  Though not found in the newer versions, in the older versions of the Bible the term "Lucifer" was given to the Devil in fictional stories.  In the English language "Lucifer" still refers to Satan.  "Lucifer" is a Latin word which means a "light bearer.  It's the most inappropriate name for Satan because Satan is NOT a "light bearer."   Much the opposite.  Satan is a spreader of darkness through his sins.

The idea of 'fallen angel' came from a pagan myth named or based on the title "morning star."  This myth was later transferred to Satan by the Christians, giving Satan the name of "Lucifer" meaning "light bearer," similar to the pagan title of "morning star."

Some Christians say that "morning star" refers to the concept of being destined to fall from the sky.

However, this entire concept of 'fallen angel' or "fallen from heaven" is a myth and gossip with NO references in the Glorious Quran.  Therefore, a Monotheistic believer CANNOT accept it.  We only accept as much as the Quran says, that Satan was of the Jinn so he rebelled against Allah's commands and was thus made an outcast - the biggest enemy of Allah and of the believers.

No, actually I don't even know of any hadith that says this even though 90% of hadiths have Bible / Torah roots.

Lo! Allah hath bought from the believers their lives and their wealth because the Garden will be theirs: they shall fight in the way of Allah and shall slay and be slain. It is a promise which is binding on Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. Who fulfilleth His covenant better than Allah? Rejoice then in your bargain that ye have made, for that is the supreme triumph.9:111
