 BismEm

Reflections on the Glorious Quran

"And for every nation have We appointed a ritual, that they may mention the name of Allah over the beast of cattle that He has given them for food; and your God is One God, therefor surrender unto Him. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the humble."  22:34  Surah Al-Hajj

By reading the above verse it is clear that Allah had commanded the Jews and Christians as well to mention the name of Allah (just the way Muslims say "BismAllah .. ) over animals being slaughtered for eating.  Though many of the Jews do adhere to kosher food which is somewhat similar to Halal for Muslims, the Christians do not follow any dietary regulations based on Faith.

Also, referring to Verse 22:34, Pickthall explains a very important aspect highlighting one of the main purposes for mentioning the name of Allah while slaughtering animals for food.

Quote
In order that they (humans) may realize the awfulness of taking life, and the solemn nature of the trust Allah has imposed on them in the permission to eat animal food.
Unquote

Thus, it ought to be kept in mind that eating the meat of an animal is not the same as eating fruits or vegetables from trees and plants.  That's because an animal is a living being with a soul and is dying to serve humans as food.  Therefore, as a gesture of respect to the soul of the dying animal it's incumbent upon us to mention the name of Allah Almighty at such a time.

The following Verse from Surah Al-Anum is further evidence to respect animals.

"There is not an animal in the earth, nor a flying creature flying on two wings, but they are peoples like unto you. We have neglected nothing in the Book (of Our decrees). Then unto their Lord they will be gathered."  6:38

Praise be to Allah (The Greatest), the Master of the entire universe.
