Like his hadith narrtions, his biography is also filled with contradictions.  His biography written by Sunnis claim that he became Muslim through the chief of his tribe, Tufail bin Amr, in Yemen and then came to visit the Prophet in Makkah (well before Hijrah) and he was re-named Abd-al-Rahman (his kunya remained Abu Hurayrah).  They say that then he went back to Yemen and stayed there for several years and then again returned to Medina after the Prophet had migrated there.  This information is totally unsupported by evidence. 

OMG!  what kind of misiformation is this?  I suppose this is the biography on Wiki which publishes this wrong info.  Reading between the lines of this absurd story pasted on Abu Huraira's so-called biography, can anyone guess the catch behind it?  Without any intentions of getting into the Sunni/Shiia squabblings which I dislike, these biography writers are trying to claim that Abu Huraira was the first child Muslim, and not Imam Ali.  Total lie.

The Makkan period after the Call lasted for 13 yrs till the Prophet migrated to Medina.  These 13 yrs were fraught with persecutions and killings of new Musim converts in Makkah by the Makkan leaders in power.  So much that some new Makkan Muslim converts had to run away to Abbysinia to escape persecution in Makkah.  No deputations, delegations or single individuals came to Makkah to embrace Islam from far away lands like Yemen etc.  The atmosphere was not at all suited for it, because of which the Prophet's mission had not reached that point uptil that time.  Such deputations and individuals began coming in Medina from the outlying areas when the Prophet migrated there.  That's when the atmosphere became more conducive for spreading and preaching Islam.   The Medina period lasted for 10 years of the Prophet's lifetime, and Abu Huraira came here from Yemen on the 7th or 8th year of Hijrah.  that's when he converted. 

The Prophet (pbuh) received the Call or first Divine Revelation in Makkah on 610 AD.  Abu Huraira was reportedly born in 603 AD.  Hijrah took place around 623 AD.  No record at all of anyone called Tufayl bin Amr chief of yemeni tribe coming to Makkah to embrace Islam at that time along with a child of his tribe and then both of them disappearing in Yemen for several years.  Absurd story!
