A Chapter in the Glorious Quran, Surah 31 is named 'Luqman' where he advices to his son with his words of great wisdom.  Can anyone throw some light as to who Luqman was according to authentic sources?

Salaams sis!  how are you Smiley

There are conflicting views among Muslim scholars and ulemas as to who Luqman was.  But no information about the exact identity of Luqman can be confirmed.  So, we can only mention the presumptions and leave it to Allah Almighty to confirm the truth.

Some Scholars believe that Luqman was a prophet, while some consider him to be a wise believing man of great morals.  His full name is said to be Luqman Ibn Tharan.   According to some reports he belonged to Egypt.  Other reports mention that he was either from Sudan or Ethiopia or Israel.  Only Allah knows the right answer.

The reason why some scholars consider Luqman to be a prophet is on the basis of the Quranic language concerning all prophets being gifted people.  Please check the following verses.

"And We verily gave Abraham of old his proper course, and We were Aware of him, "  21:51

"And verily We gave unto Moses the Scripture " 2:87

"And And when he reached his prime We gave him wisdom and knowledge. Thus We reward the good. " 12:22    (About Prophet Yusuf)

"And unto Lot We gave judgment and knowledge,"  21:74

"And verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever gives thanks, he gives thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuses--Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise."  31:12

Thus, from the style of the Glorious Quran, some people presume that Luqman was a prophet.  But since the Quran does not mention that in so many words, we cannot be sure that Luqman was a prophet and neither can we presume that he received revelations.

Some interpreters also say that Luqman was the cousin of Job.  Some claim that Luqman lived during the Prophet Daud.  Again, these presumptions cannot be confirmed.  Only Allah knows best.

But most Muslims are of the opinion that Luqman was an intelligent and wise 'wali' and not a prophet.

As it always happens among several of our so-called Muslim 'scholar' story tellers, there are various stories on Luqman just as we find stories on other issues.  I once read a story on some site (don't recall which one) that Luqman was from Nubia (present day Ethiopia),  and was a wise and perceptive person since early in life.  He saw a dream in which Allah gave him a choice whether he wanted to be a prophet or a wise man. Luqman chose to be a wise man.  Later in life, Luqman was captured by slave-traders and sold as a slave. His master was a kind man and ordered that immediately after his death, Luqman should be freed. When he became free, Luqman travelled and settled in the area of Elah and Midian. He was appointed as a judge during King David's time.  But only Allah knows how far this story is true.

Apart from the Verses on Luqman mentioned in Surah 31, none of the other views of the scholars and interpreters are contained in the Glorious Quran.

We can confirm only the information contained on Luqman in Surah 31.
