Salaams folks.  There's this excellent mouth watering Middle-Eastern dish, baked lamb with lentils over mashed potatoes.  Has anyone tried it?  The original recipe is a bit complicated, in that, the lamb pieces with spices, mashed potatoes and condensed tomato soup are put in the oven altogether to cook.

But my sister-in-law made it in a different way.  She made it on the cooker and only baked the mashed potatoes.  She first cooked the lamb and lentils with with the standard spices and Campbell's condensed tomato soup until meat was tender, takes 1 and a half hours approx.  You can use your own favorite spices.   My sister-in-law used green lentils.  You can also use the pink lentils (or masoor dal as we call it in Urdu).

In the meantime she peeled the potatoes, boiled and mashed them.  Seasoned the mashed potatoes with salt, pepper and garlic/ginger paste.  Then spread it on a baking dish or casserole and baked it for about 20 minutes at 450F.
After removing the baked mashed potatoes from the oven, she spread the prepared lamb & lentil over the mashed potatoes.  You can have it with green salad or green boiled veggies and buns.  Believe me folks!  it was mesmerizing!!!!

Sorry folks, image is lost.  It was with imageshack; they silently discontinued our image hosting and we forgot to keep the backup

MashAllah, that's fabulous.  I know of this dish though I've never made it yet.  Your sister-in-law's idea seems creative and good.  She's reversed the process.  It's a Middle-Eastern dish and in the orginal recipe, as far as I think, the meat and lentils are baked with all spices including condensed tomato soup and some veggie stock for 2 hours or until tender.  In the meantime the potatoes are boiled and mashed and then seasoned with salt and garlic powder.  And then the baked meat is spread over the mashed potatoes.  That's it.  It's ready to be served.  But your idea also sounds very nice and less cumbersome as cooking meat in the oven is a bit tricky though if done properly, it tastes very nice.

Thanks for this one sis.  It's a simple dish and I'll try it out one of these days.
