Soon after Gaza hospital bombing killing and maiming hundreds, Israel was quick to accuse Islamic Jihad of a misfired rocket.  That didn't sound plausible because IJ does not have such sophisticated bombing devices.  Zionist lie was fully exposed when anglican archbishop of Jerusalem,Hosam Naoum,  said today that 3 or 4 days prior to boming Israel had warned Gaza hospital to evacuate. Yet CIA claims in its flawed analysis that the rocket did not come from Israel.  But conveniently does not explain how Israel could have known 4 days earlier that a "misfired" rocket from IJ was coming.  Yet on the basis of this flawed & bias analysis of CIA, Biden is comforting Israel he believes Israel didn't do that war crimes bombing.

BismEm

 salamem

To know the most correct and authentic Islamic perception of dogs, first we need to read Surah Al-Kahf, verses 13-27, which I quote as under.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We narrate unto thee their story with truth. Lo! they were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.
And We made firm their hearts when they stood forth and said: Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We cry unto no God beside Him, for then should we utter an enormity.
These, our people, have chosen (other) gods beside Him though they bring no clear warrant (vouchsafed) to them. And who doth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah ?
And when ye withdraw from them and that which they worship except Allah, then seek refuge in the Cave; your Lord will spread for you of His mercy and will prepare for you a pillow in your plight.
And thou mightest have seen the sun when it rose move away from their cave to the right, and when it set go past them on the left, and they were in the cleft thereof. That was (one) of the portents of Allah. He whom Allah guideth, he indeed is led aright, and he whom He sendeth astray, for him thou wilt not find a guiding friend.
And thou wouldst have deemed them waking though they were asleep, and We caused them to turn over to the right and the left, and their dog stretching out his paws on the threshold. If thou hadst observed them closely thou hadst assuredly turned away from them in flight, and hadst been filled with awe of them.
And in like manner We awakened them that they might question one another. A speaker from among them said: How long have ye tarried ? They said: We have tarried a day or some part of a day, (Others) said: Your Lord best knoweth what ye have tarried. Now send one of you with this your silver coin unto the city, and let him see what food is purest there and bring you a supply thereof. Let him be courteous and let no man know of you.
For they, if they should come to know of you, will stone you or turn you back to their religion; then ye will never prosper.
And in like manner We disclosed them (to the people of the city) that they might know that the promise of Allah is true, and that, as for the Hour, there is no doubt concerning it. When (the people of the city) disputed of their case among themselves, they said: Build over them a building; their Lord knoweth best concerning them. Those who won their point said: We verily shall build a place of worship over them.
(Some) will say: They were three, their dog the fourth, and (some) say: Five, their dog the sixth, guessing at random; and (some) say: Seven, and their dog the eighth. Say (O Muhammad): My Lord is Best Aware of their number. None knoweth them save a few. So contend not concerning them except with an outward contending, and ask not any of them to pronounce concerning them.
And say not of anything: Lo! I shall do that tomorrow,
Except if Allah will. And remember thy Lord when thou forgettest, and say: It may be that my Lord guideth me unto a nearer way of truth than this.
And (it is said) they tarried in their Cave three hundred years and add nine.
Say: Allah is Best Aware how long they tarried. His is the Invisible of the heavens and the earth. How clear of sight is He and keen of hearing! They have no protecting friend beside Him, and He maketh none to share in His government.
And recite that which hath been revealed unto thee of the Scripture of thy Lord. There is none who can change His words, and thou wilt find no refuge beside Him.
GLORIOUS QURAAN:  18:13-27
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This story in the Quran is about a group of sincere believers thousands of years ago, who sought refuge in a cave to escape persecution for their belief in Allah from the disbelieving people of their town.  They also had a pet dog whom they took with them.  This dog stayed with them all the time in the cave, and Allah protected all of them, including the dog.  Allah says clearly in this very vivid and moving narration that only Allah knows the exact number of individuals who were hiding in that cave, and only Allah knows how long precisely they stayed in the cave.  We are not to guess and make our own pronouncements concerning them.

Yet, I am surprised to find that there are several Ahadith narrations (written by the medieval clerics of course) that declare dogs as "unclean" or even "evil" saying that the presence of dogs prevent angels from entering our homes.  There are various other harsh Hadiths about dogs that clearly say things for which Allah has given NO warrant.

Quoting an excerpt from Quran-Islam.org
Quote ::
"If dogs were prohibited and dirty, would God speak of the Companions of the Cave (who had a dog) as good believers?   Traditional Muslim scholars claim that the saliva of the dog contains contamination.  In V.5:4 God tells us that it is okay to eat what the trained dogs catch (dogs are used in hunting). If the dog is an animal which causes contamination by mere touch, would God tell us that it is perfectly alright to eat what the dog catches with his mouth (let alone just touch the dog)?   The Quran contains a very important rule for all believers, and the rule is:
Nothing is haram (unlawful) unless it is prohibited by God Himself, and since God describes the Quran as complete, perfect and fully detailed, thus all the prohibitions decreed by God are found in the Quran. The following Quranic verses confirm this truth:   "Shall I seek other than God as a law maker, when He has brought down to you the Book fully detailed?” 6:114. "

Kindly utilize the contents of Quran-Islam.org to learn more on this topic.

Just think of it this way:  Would the beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) ever come up with such bizarre, un-Quranic and unwarranted ideas and attribute them to the Islamic code of ethics?   NEVER.  Those who accept such forged ahadith only prove their own disloyalty to the Quran and the Prophet (pbuh) in preference to the clerics.

On the contrary, the Prophet's love, kindness and tenderness toward humans as well as animals is well known.

We need to immediately dismiss all such anti-dog Hadiths and defend the Prophet (pbuh) against these malicious and ignorant falsehoods.  Dogs are beautiful and loyal animals of our planet, Alhumdulilah, and we must keep them safe from the sort of absurd myths they have been associated with.

It truly saddens me that the Hadith writers pen such phony and senseless narrations based on their own whims and desires, completely ignoring the values and teachings of the Noble Quran.   Nowhere does the Quran ever mention of any animal as "unclean" or "evil."  In fact, much the opposite.  The Quran clearly states that every animal is a living being like ourselves who will eventually be gathered before Allah.   The Quran also states that on the Day of Judgment, a beast will be called as a witness against humans, for humans never had faith in Allah's revelations.

There is not an animal in the earth, nor a flying creature flying on two wings, but they are peoples like unto you. We have neglected nothing in the Book (of Our decrees). Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.  (6:38)  Surah Al-Anam

And when the word is fulfilled concerning them, We shall bring forth a beast of the earth to speak unto them because mankind had not faith in Our revelations.  (27:82)  Surah An-Naml

As believers who claim to understand the Glorious Quran, it's incumbent upon us to care and admire the existence of all animals.

And in your creation, and all the beasts that He scattereth in the earth, are portents for a folk whose faith is sure.   (45:4)  Surah Al-Jathiyah

In the fourth verse of Surah Al-Maidah, Allah says that it is lawful to eat whatever the trained hunting dogs catch.  If dogs were as prohibited as the Hadith states, Allah surely would not allow us to eat the prey caught by the hunting dogs with their mouths.  This point has already been clarified at Quran-Islam.org.

They ask thee (O Muhammad) what is made lawful for them. Say: (all) good things are made lawful for you. And those beasts and birds of prey which ye have trained as hounds are trained, ye teach them that which Allah taught you; so eat of that which they catch for you and mention Allah's name upon it, and observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is swift to take account.  (5:4)  Surah Al-Maidah

(It's important to mention here that Islam allows hunting only for the purpose of food, not for fun or pastime.  The Islamic concept does not conform with killing a living being without a very just cause.  The Quran indicates nothing on hunting viewed as a sport.  And even for the purpose of food, hunting is disallowed while one is on pilgrimage, confirmed in the Quran.).

Not to mention all those numerous uses and skills of dogs.  Their innocence, loyalty and deep love for their masters make them excellent companions.  They can be perfect herders for guarding flocks of sheep and cattle and helpful around farmhouses.  This does allow this, but expects us to use dogs only to selfishly make use of them and then shut them out of our homes. A very heartless and un-Quranic teaching with no logic!   Dogs have a deep sense of belonging, a natural instinct to protect the place where they are reared and a very accurate olfactory sense.  These skills are often utilized by individuals, police and military for the purpose of protection and search.

Since the last decade or so, it has also been found that dogs of all breeds possess an amazing natural tendency of being able to predict epileptic seizures in people suffering from this disease.  Those dogs in the homes of persons having epilepsy, get restless and begin to bark incessantly an hour or so before the epileptic seizure as a warning signal.  So far, according to reports, this warning signal of dogs has never been wrong.  Then, of course, there are so many people who are blind and depend entirely upon the assistance of trained dogs who actually take care of them a lot better than many of their human companions.

Coming back to Surah Al-Kahf, if you refer again to those above verses, the Quran mentions about a dog as sharing its presence with believing people.  The dog is mentioned as associated with those people who were the favoured ones of Allah.  This makes the portrayal of dogs in the Quran, very positive and complimentary.  Yet, the present-day imams and sheikhs ignore the words, ethics and ideology of the Noble Quran.  They also purposely disregard the very gentle temperament of the Prophet (pbuh) who was so particular about the aspect of kindness.

Concerning various issues, the Hadith writers prefer to go back to the pre-Islamic traditions of superstitious ideas that were specifically abolished by the Prophet (pbuh) in accordance with Quranic values.  According to the Hadith of al-Bukhari and others, black dogs are considered evil and must be killed.  After the conquest of Makkah, there were various segments of lukewarm 'Muslims' who were not happy with the reforms introduced by the Prophet based on Quranic principles and were eager to revive the old traditions.  It was much the same in Persia as well.  After all, let's not forget, except of Malik's al-Muwatta, all Hadith writers came all the way from Persia to "collect narrations" starting approximately 200 years after the passing of the Prophet (pbuh) .. something that makes the Hadith institution still more suspicious.  That's when the Hadith writers re-introduced many superstitious customs borrowed either from pre-Islamic Arabia or from the altered versions of the Old and New Testaments.  This is precisely the reason why majority of the Hadith narrations totally clash with the values of the Noble Quran and the enlightened personality of the Prophet (pbuh).

Killing of black dogs and cats was a culture rampant during the Days of Ignorance, not just in the Arabian Peninsula but also in Europe.  During Halloween, the practice of exorcism and killing of black cats was frequently practiced in Europe.  Black cats were considered bad omen.  Even nowadays in North America during Halloween, there are certain deviant cults that kidnap and kill black cats.  The law enforcers often caution owners of black cats, telling them not to let their pets wander outside of their homes.  Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic traditions of Ireland, and Celts were pagans.

The stupid and disgusting myth of claiming black dogs to be "devils" sprout from the same ignorant roots.   According to superstitious ideas of ancient Europeans and Celts, and also in many pagan communities of pre-Islamic Arabia, black dog was a metaphor of depression and misfortune, and symbolic of a devil.  Author Nancy Marano writes in her article “Black Dog Syndrome” :

“Superstitions give black dogs bad press. In European and British folklore black dogs often appear as evil forces portending death to those who see them. Writers like Sir Walter Scott and Arthur Conan Doyle perpetuated these superstitions by using spectral hounds, usually black and fearsome, in their stories and poems. These tales may pass into people’s beliefs subconsciously.”

Even today, some sections of the society carry such notions in their sub-conscious minds.  Marano further states:

“Did you know that black dogs, especially big black dogs, such as Labs and Lab mixes, Rottweilers, Chows, or Newfoundlands, are usually the last ones to be adopted from shelters or rescue groups? Black dogs, and cats too, are euthanized at a higher rate than other animals.”

Check this site for Marano's article.

The clerics who have written such Hadith about black dogs are only reviving the ancient  pagan practices.

Also, it's no secret that many Hadith narrations contradict each other.  Regarding the topic of dogs, the Hadith language itself indicates that there is a sort of debate going on within it, between those who are against dogs and those who are for them.  As mentioned, there are various harsh Hadeeth narrations that despise dogs.  Then again, there are some that are moderate.  For example, check the following.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 1:174, narrated by Abu Huraira. The Prophet said: "A man saw a dog eating mud from (the severity of) thirst. So, that man took a shoe (and filled it) with water and kept on pouring the water for the dog till it quenched its thirst. So Allah approved of his deed and made him to enter Paradise."

The above hadith has 2 versions.  One is as stated.  There's another hadith which is identical to this, except that instead of a man seeing a thirsty dog, it says that a prostitute saw it and gave water to the dog by filling up a shoe.  Such differences are also indicate careless storytelling where the storytellers forget the aspect of homogeneity and bang into contradiction.  Howfever, my point is simply to highlight the contradiction of values within the hadith literature itself.

And narrated Hamza bin 'Abdullah -- My father said: "During the lifetime of Allah's Apostle, the dogs used to urinate, and pass through the mosques (come and go), nevertheless they never used to sprinkle water on it (urine of the dog)."

We find certain narrations stating that dogs are so unclean that they shouldn't be allowed into homes .. and then, contrary to that, the above Hadith states that during the time of the Prophet, dogs would pass through mosques and also urinate freely within its premises.  The contradiction of values is glaring!  This is because so many different people have barged into the institution of Hadith, each one trying to promote what they think fit .. and everything is done in the name of the Prophet, only for the purpose of providing leverage to their respective ideas.   The approach and practice is too offensive for words, flatly unacceptable.

The conclusion would be, all rulings pertaining to dogs come from the deeply controversial Hadith and NOT from the Noble Quran. The Quran does not state a single word against dogs, and the Prophet never disallowed or discouraged anything that isn't forbidden in the Quran.  Unfortunately, the institution of Hadith (the brainchild of the clerics) happens to be notorious for spreading falsehood for selfish reasons /motives.  Considering the fact that Allah is the only One Who declares what is Halal and what isn't (check Surah At-Tahrim), and Allah has said that the Quran is complete & comprehensive, and nothing is omitted from it, one is left to conclude that the jurists too often propound their own personal ideologies in the name of Islam and the Prophet.  Needless to say, this is pathetic, disturbing and disgusting.

JazekAllah Khair
As-salaam Alaikum Wr Br

 wsalam and Alhamdulilah, very insightful piece of writing.  as an animal and dog lover i've also often wondered on this issue.  why have the poor dogs been targetted?  what's this got to do with Islam or being pious?  it has no connection at all.  i think u have correctly discerned the desire of many to go back and revive the superstitious practices of the ignorant past.

Ya Allah, why do people have to be so blind?  the guidance of Allah is needed now as never before!

Thanks sister for this work

The other day I had an argument with a hadither lady on email over this issue.  A common sister-friend of ours got a cat and a puppy.  The hadither told  me something to the effect that prayers won't be valid with a dog in the house.  I told her she was being thoroughly illogical.  I also forwarded her this post.  She never replied.

You know, if you read the Verses quoted above of Surah Al-Kahf (18:13-27), you'll realize that the Noble Qur'an is the only Divne Book that presents dogs as man's best friend.  It tells us about a group of believers on the move to avoid persecution from disbelievers.  The dog belonged to the group of believers, accompanying them in their journey ..... just as dogs always accompany their masters while hiking, walking, on pickniking, on vacations, while relocating and while escaping danger.

It's intolerable that the hadith scheme thru its nasty manipulations has turned this faithful animal and man's best friend into an outcast.

The Noble Quran is the only Book which presents dog as man's best friend.   So correct Sister Ruhi.

Thanks for quoting this great verse sister Muslima.  As usual, your references to the Quranic verses are always so accurate, Subhan'Allah.  Verse 16:116 is a clear commandment from Allah to believers not to fabricate.  And yet the Muslims have deviated so much that more than 95% of Islamic laws today are based on fabrication in the name of "Shariah."  What a pity.  A well-known imam of our community here once mentioned in a public lecture that the percentage of laws taken from the Quran are only 4%.  So, my question to these people is, where is the bulk of 96% from?  That's how much the so-called Muslims have distorted our beautiful Faith .... and one of those distortions is this hadith law against dogs .. that dogs are "unclean" or "najis."   Even if you show them Quranic verses to refute their claim it falls on deaf ears.  Dogs are such wonderful, innocent and loyal animals.  Only because of this wicked & false hadith law, they have been made  outcasts for nothing.  Really sad  Sad

 Thanks and u are welcome sister Smiley u have valid question sis If it's only 4% from Quran then how Is it's called sharia /Islamic law ,Quranic law ? It's  Hadith sharia Muslims are following men-made law, hadith sharia and who's  responsible ? Ulma's . The Problem are ulma's they are mischief makers ,ulma's are Psychologically attached to this literature so-called Hadith and they continuously fooling ummah but it's their own loss.Quran's state is very clearly about them .

That they may bear their burdens undiminished on the Day of Resurrection, with somewhat of the burdens of those whom they mislead without knowledge. Ah! evil is that which they bear! 16:25

There's another evidence that in the early days of Islam, dogs were neither ostracized nor tabooed as pets.  I have come across several paintings of the Islamic era by medieval European artists who depicted the various spheres of the medieval Islamic society through their paintbrushes after acquiring the necessary details & facts of that society either personally or through friends and other contemporaries in the Muslim world.  A number of such paintings show Arab Muslims with pet dogs as companions while relaxing or walking, not necessarily only while hunting or guarding their sheep and cattle.  Take a look at the following pieces of art as examples.

Salams folks.  I came across this a couple of days ago.

Someone in Quora, baffled by the nonsense galore in Hadith, asked "Why did Muhammad claim that keeping dogs as pets reduces the good deeds of Muslims?"  The big problem is that non-Muslims take for granted that Hadith is really the words of the Prophet (pbuh).

The answer provided by some Hadithist @ Quora was: "For the millionth time, please adhere to intellectual honesty.  If you cite something, cite properly. You are cutting one sentence out of context, without providing any tailing. Here’s how you would cite what you cited."

The "tailing" hadith is as follows:
Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever keeps a dog, one Qirat of the reward of his good deeds is deducted daily, unless the dog is used for guarding a farm or cattle." Abu Huraira (in another narration) said from the Prophet, "unless it is used for guarding sheep or farms, or for dog for guarding cattle or for hunting." (Narrated by Abu Hurairah, Hadith no.3.515)

The portion in green supposed to be the first part of the hadith and the one in mauve is the 'brilliant' tailing.

Reason for the Hadithist's cranky tantrum is basically the embarrassment for not having a logical response.   Then again, to make the hadith institution appear a scholarly ideology, the orchestration is the use of terms like "tailing" etc.   The Hadithist admits with a spin that according to the above hadith, rearing dogs does diminish good deeds and then adds that you can keep dogs to utilize their services like hunting or guarding.   Whoa!  Everyone knows this.  It's the same old hadith junk that disallows you to love dogs from your heart but only permits you to utilize their services to serve your practical needs, promoting a purely materialistic approach and dissuading to nurture affection for them.   We all know that illogical and insensitive idea of Hadith in regard to dogs.  The real question is, why the heck does the  moronic hadith tell us to view dogs so materialistically and disdainfully?  Dogs are such wonderful and faithful pets.  A clear allusion to this aspect has been elucidated beautifully in Surah Al-Kahf.  Yet why is the champion liar Abu Hurairah forging lies in the name of our beloved Prophet (pbuh) and overriding the Quranic principle on dogs which does NOT say anything of the sort as babbled by the champion liar and repeated by his daft followers?    The Hadithist failed to answer that.    He was left completely bowled and tried to cover it up by a weird show of temper  and blaming the questioner for omitting the second part of the narration.  Such attitude is not unusual.

This Hadith not only clashes with Quranic information and principles, it also misrepresents the Prophet (pbuh) by falsely portraying him as if he knew the perception and decisions of Allah Almighty concerning His judgment of humanity.

The Quora Hadithist then writes:

Quote:
"Now to why, dogs as pets, are not a good thing according to Islam. Islam generally does not like in-house pets, because animals can not live with the standards that Islam requires of humans. That means, humans are the creatures that have to succumb down to the quality of living of animals.   Plus, dogs are impure according to Islam, so they prevent Muslims from doing prayers as they should, unless kept in a contained area, in which case it would be animal cruelty, against Islamic values."
Unquote:

I think the folly of his opinion is much too obvious; it doesn't require citing.   House pets live in whatever conditions provided by their masters or owners.  If you are a lazy owner, never clean your dog's food & water troughs and never give your dog a bath, then the dog will be forced to stay unclean because of the carelessness of the master.  Don't tell me that taking care of your pets such as cleaning their food containers and bathing them is against Islam.  No way will anyone in their right mind buy such brazen lies in the name of "Islam."

Moreover  if "animals can not live with the standards that Islam requires of humans" then why are cats allowed to stay indoor and even sit on the prayer mat?   Not that I have anything against kitties lazing around on my prayer mat, but this Hadither's sub-standard talk is much too offensive.   Moreover .. though cats don't require bathing, they can nevertheless carry similar germs as dogs. It's true that unlike dogs, cats don't require bathing.  But that doesn't make dogs "unclean."  Even humans require bathing otherwise their body odor can be far worse than dogs.  The responsibility of bathing dogs if reared as indoor pets is ours.  The Hadithist hasn't forgotten to include that standard tune: "Dogs are impure according to Islam."   Who said that?   O! Hadith again.  The bulk of lies that have turned a lovely pet  like dogs into an outcast are the prates and blathers of the "father of cat" - Abu Hurairah (that's what his name means).   He was indeed fit to be nothing beyond the dad of a kitty, and I'm sure the kitty would be an intelligent trainer for him.  His forged hadith narrations against dogs are simply expressions of his personal dislike for dogs.

LOL.  If a questioner forgets to quote the second part of the hadith, that becomes "intellectual dishonesty."  But a forged hadith that does not conform with Quranic information nor values isn't "intellectual dishonesty"?????    The Quora hadithist is purposely being evasive about the Quran because he knows that the hadith culture of ostracizing dogs is an unwarranted presumption  not supported by the Quran.   I consider such an attitude of the hadithist the most intense "intellectual dishonesty."  The hadith institution itself is a massive intellectual deceit and one has to be deceitful oneself to accept it.

You're also right sister Ruhi, all those bias ahadith shunning, blacklisting and snubbing dogs sprout from Abu Huraira's personal dislike for dogs.  He liked cats but didn't like dogs.  I realize different people may appreciate different pets.  But that certainly doesn't mean you start demonizing the pets you personally don't like .... and that too by forging the name of the Prophet (pbuh).  AstaghfarAllah.

View the hadith below.  Yet another thundering forgery and an evidence of the narrator's own whims.

How are cats useful and how does their usefulness become a justification for validity of prayers?   Hadithists will claim cats are useful because they prey on rats and if there are rats in a house, having a cat will be helpful.  But what if there aren't any rats in a home?  Furthermore, dogs can also chase rats and be similarly useful.  Still more importantly, dogs can chase out intruders who sneak into homes and that makes them still more useful;  also they can do this job more effectively if they are reared inside the homes rather than kept outdoors locked in kennels.

The crux of the matter is, whether cats or dogs, we nurture them out of love and affection as a part of our family .. not merely for their usefulness.

Abu Hurairah, the pathological liar engulfed in selfishness, really worked hard in this world to pave his path leading to Hellfire in the next world.  He will be the most 'useful pet' in Hell for the dwellers of the fire, InshAllah.

So true ... I couldn't have said it better.

Absolutely, this is the point Abu Huraira was incapable of grasping and his personal dislike for the poor doggies turned him into a selfish and heartless brute against all dogs.

I love that image of a very cute kitty on the prayer mat.  It's Abu Huraira bias lies that need to stop.

InshAllah, ameen.  I honestly wish, considering the amount of damage this liar has done to Islam.

Btw, thanks Sister Heba for putting up those paintings.  These are another bunch of evidences to expose the unauthenticity of dog ahadith.

Well, frankly, the entire school of hadith is much too tainted.
