 BismEm

"He it is Who did create you from a single soul, and therefrom did make his mate that he might take rest in her. And when he covered her she bore a light burden, and she passed (unnoticed) with it, but when it became heavy they cried unto Allah, their Lord, saying: If you givest unto us aright we shall be of the thankful."  (7:189)  Surah Al-Araf

Salaams, would anyone know if this verse refers to the initial and later stages of pregnancy in marriage?

Thanks ....

Wa'Salaam.  Yes sister, u r right.  It does refer to the early and later stages of pregnancy after marriage.  The verse refers that in the early stage the woman is usually able to go about with her normal routine without any difficulties.  But in the later stages when the pregnancy makes her grow heavy, then she needs to take more care of herself.  At this time the husband and wife feel concerned about the welfare of their future child.  Thus, they pray to Allah requesting Him to bestow on them a healthy baby and then they would be very thankful to Allah.

The following verse 7:190, if you read it, refers to human ingratitude and their inclination to polytheism.  It says that when the wife is about to give birth, she and her husband both pray to Allah, asking for a healthy child.  But when Allah grants them a healthy child through His mercy, they forget the kindness of Allah and instead they express their thanks to idols or some other deity which are useless and can never help them.  Thus, humans prove themselves ungrateful to Allah Almighty.

These verses do not refer to any specific man or woman.  Rather, the allusion is to men and women generally.  Also, the reference largely includes and condemns the polytheistic culture of pre-Islamic Makkah.

A sister at the community centre was arguing last week that Verse 7:189 refers to Adam and his wife.   She's definitely wrong, ha?

Only the first line of this Verse refers to the first man and wife (Adam and his wife).  But the content that follows is an admonishment to all humankind (men and women).  It refers to the overall attitude of majority of men and women ... that when a woman is pregnant, she and her husband  are full of concern for the future well-being of their child.  But after the infant is born healthy and normal, the parents forget the favor and kindness of Allah Almighty.  In the case of polytheists, they associate partners with Allah while so-called believers ignore His favor.

Right Sister Heba.

There is a false hadith (as always) - I don't recall its reference number but Maududi has also mentioned it in his commentary of V.7:189 and he too stated it's false - which claims that when Adam's wife was pregnant, both Adam and his wife prayed to Allah Almighty for the well-being of their child in the womb.  But when the child was born well and healthy, they associated others with Allah.    Hadith was unable to understand this Quranic Verse which is a very common problem with the hadith literature.  Either the hadith narrator or the compiler had misunderstood the Verse.  They thought that the first man and wife referred in the initial line alludes to the same couple discussed in the text that follows.  That's a misunderstanding spread by hadith.

Exactly brother TS ..... that sister's misunderstanding also went on the same lines who is a hadithiser.
