 BismEm

As-salam Alaikum, folks!  Smiley  No one came to the kitchen for a very long time, and tonight I tried a simple new recipe which was a great hit with the kids at home.  My mom and husband also loved it.  So I thought I'll share it here too.

In Northern Europe this is called a savoury pastry pie.  In France I guess they would all it quiche and in North America it would probably be called simply a crusty pie.  No matter what you name it, it's a baked pie dish consisting of minced meat with pastry crust covered with eggs and milk.   Nah, it isn't confusing.  We'll make it right now, step by step, and you'll see how simple it is .. and of course delicious when fully prepared.  It tastes fabulous with a huge bowl of fresh green salad, mashed potatoes or boiled vegetables viz. peas & carrots and a glass of orange juice.

Ok, so here we go ....

I'll be using corn oil instead of butter or margarine for a healthier option.

Dough

Flour 1.6 cups
Oil half cup
1 tb sp cold water

Filling

I medium onion, peeled & chopped
Lean minced meat 0.4 kg or 400gm
2 tb sp oil
1 tsp full ground garlic & ginger
Less than half tsp chilli powder
1 tsp full cumin powder
Half tsp salt
Pepper to taste
Quarter tsp mixed herbs
Three-quarter cup grated cheese
1 egg
A little less than half cup milk

METHOD

1) Preheat oven to 425F

2) Prepare the dough.  Mix flour and oil into crumbles.  Add water and work into a dough.  Line the dough on an ovenproof pie dish.  Put the dish in the fridge for 15 minutes.  Then pre-bake for 10 to 12 minutes.

3) Next step, prepare the minced meat filling.  Fry the chopped onion in oil.  Add minced meat and fry until quite dry.  Then add all spices / seasonings and simmer for 5 minutes.  Add I cup water and cook for 20 to 30 minutes until the water is dry and the minced meat is almost cooked.  Mix the grated cheese.

4) Then spread the minced meat and cheese evenly over the pre-baked dough.

5) Mix the egg and milk with a pinch of salt and beat well for a few minutes.  Pour the egg mixture over the minced meat which is spread on the dough.

6) Bake at 400F for 20 minutes.

Variations:

-  To make the minced meat taste nicer, you can mix chopped tomatoes while cooking it.

-  After it's baked, you can garnish the pie with fresh chopped green corriander leaves.

Aww!  crusty mince pie .. this is one of my favorites.  Alhumdulilah.  You have given the recipe very plainly & simply which makes it still better.  I would like to try the identical recipe with chicken and also use some tabasco sauce with it.  How about that?

Many thanks sis Heba!

MashAllah, this seems mouth-watering!  I too would like to try it with chicken.  You know what, I want to prepare chicken with peas and potatoe cubes, mix it with white thick white sauce and fill the tart with it.  How about that?     Smiley

That too sounds fab.  In that case you'll only need to bake the empty tart.  The white sauce filling with chicken, peas & potatoes gotta be fully cooked so u can simply spread it over the prepared tart and it's ready to eat.
