BismEm

"(In the case of) those of you who are about to die and leave behind them wives, they should bequeath unto their wives a provision for the year without turning them out, but if they go out (of their own accord) there is no sin for you in that which they do of themselves within their rights. Allah is Mighty, Wise."  [2:240]

The above verse 240 from Surah Al-Baqra explains the rights of widows .. it's also often taken for those who are co-wives and do not have grown-up children to support them.  In the 7th century (and probably even now) in polygamous families if a man passed away leaving behind 2, 3 or 4 wives, and any of the wives happened to be childless or with a minor child or children, while the other wives or wife had adult children capable of earning & supporting (mainly sons in those days), they would sometimes turn away from supporting their father's widows or stepmothers.  Thus, this verse is a dictate saying all such dependent widows have a right over their husband's families to support them financially for at least a year after their husband's death, unless they desire to leave on their own in a respectable manner.

And Allah knows best

Verses on not to interfere with the lives of widows.

Hummm ... that's right.  I also think this Verse basically refers to the situation in middle-class families where the husband or patriarch of the family doesn't have much assets.  I mean, families where people with meager means who earn and spend to survive on a day-to-day basis.  In case of those with large assets comes the aspect of distribution of asset according to the will, right?   A wife with small or smaller kids would have a share in the will.  Or even if a fourth wife is childless, she would still have a legal share even if that share isn't much.

That's right sister Heba.  I think so too.  Good point.
