Salaam All
I was hoping insha Allah someone would guide me about how many rakats one is to peform in all the 5 prayers and also the night prayers using the quran as a guide.
Are number of  rakats obligatory for fard prayers and not for nafl or they obligatory for all prayers?

Walaikum salaam brother.  From the points in our post elucidating rules of Salaat as stated in the Quran, number of rakats as well as its layout is one of the features that's up to us to decide.  As has been coming down to us traditionally, obligatory (fard) rakats are counted as a total of 17 in all five prayers -- 2 for Fajr, 4 in Zohr, 4 in Asr, 3 Maghrib and 4 in Isha.  Night prayers which can either be extra (or nafl) prayers offered after Isha before going to bed or after waking up from sleep in the middle of the night (known as Tahajud prayer) at least 30 minutes prior to Fajr, can consist of any number of rakats but generally from what I know, people pray a minimal of 4 rakats.

The method for offering fard rakats and nafl rakats is exactly the same.
