At family get togethers the men pray at the front and the women at the back.  I don't know if this is the correct/Quranic way, but it seems to be the done method of combined congregational prayer.
Is this allowed?
What is the Quranic way for congregational prayer?

Salaam

Walaikum Salam. Details on this aspect aren't specified in the Quran but we can definitely take the guidelines from the Quran.  That involves, never forgetting the rules of decency and respect in the case of both genders for each other.  No lewdness, no lewd gestures, no harassment and no impertinence .. just as Allah has disallowed all of this during Hajj.  Of course the Quran make is abundantly clear that such acts/gestures are bad at all times but one needs to be especially aware during worship.

The Quran says nothing to indicate nor hint that mixed congregational prayers aren't allowed.  However, for the security & peace of mind of women, it's certainly advisable to group the two genders separately in a mixed congregation.  Either the women's group can stand for prayer beside the men's group or behind makes no difference.  The latter isn't a reference of women being less important or inferior.  It's only for the purpose of guarding the modesty of females from possible gazers during ruku and sajood.  Not to mention, any man who comes for salat with such intentions is the lowest of sub-humans.  Unfortunately such folks do exist and Allah Almighty will definitely deal with them either in this world or in the next for sure.
