 BismEm

Surah Saad: Verses 43-44.

Translation Pickthall.

43. And We bestowed on him (again) his household and therewith the like thereof, a mercy from Us, and a memorial for men of understanding.

44. And (it was said unto him): Take in thine hand a branch and smite therewith, and break not thine oath. Lo! We found him steadfast, how excellent a slave! Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (to his Lord).

Translation Haleem:

43 and We restored his family to him, with many more like them: a sign of Our mercy and a lesson to all who understand.

44 ‘Take a small bunch of grass in your hand, and strike [her] with that so as not to break your oath.’

While Pickthall does not give any commentaries for the above 2 Verses of Surah Saad, Abdel Haleem does but I see no evidence of authenticity of Haleem's opinion which though he has attributed to the traditional tafsir writers .. in other words, the Hadithists.  Here is what Haleem writes on Verses 43 and 44 "Quranic commentators explain that, when his wife blasphemed, Job swore that if he recovered from his illness, he would beat her with one hundred lashes. When he recovered, however, he regretted his hasty oath, so God gave him this instruction."  Of course, striking with a bunch of grass is a symbolic act which wouldn't hurt anyone, the purpose being only to keep the oath.  But I'm wondering where did the these tafsir writers get the idea of Prophet Job's wife committing blasphemy?

What is your opinion?

My opinion is the same as yours brother.  I also see no evidence of authenticity in the interpretation of commentators as paraphrased by Haleem.  It's obvious Haleem does believe in this guesswork-tafsir, that's why in his translation of Verse 44 he has added "her" in bracket so he could make it compatible with the tafsir writer's misinterpretation.  There are hardly any translators who haven't linked at least a few of their translated Verses with Hadith and traditional tafsirs.  What beats me is, how on earth do they think these Hadithists and tafsir writers came to know the explanations of several Verses throughout the Quran that Allah has clearly kept hidden?  If you ask Haleem, he will say he is only quoting a commentator but he won't know how the commentator declared such a story when there is no evidence in the Quran on those lines?  It just shows their blind faith in Hadith and thus their claim that "hadith explains the Quran."   But, as the phrase goes, there's enough light for one who wants to see.  The more insightful ones who have rummaged through the extra-Quranic garbage of so-called scholars and Hadith narrators can simply discard such talks as mentioned by Haleem.  Even if Prophet Job's wife did blaspheme, I'm aware the strike with bunch of grass is symbolic causing no hurt.  However the point is how did the idea of blasphemy by the wife of Job come in the first place?  There can be no authentic source other than the Quran and the Quran does not mention this point.

Thanks a lot Sister Heba.  I second you on that.  I was taken aback on Haleem's confidence on such sources.  I thought he was one of those few translators who didn't link his work with hadith.   But as you said, there aren't any who don't altogether.

It's really very difficult to find a non-Hadither translator.  The alternative is the other extreme like Free Minds translation (aka "progressive Muslims")  which has just as many pitfalls in its own ways.

Right brother TS and Sister Zeynab.  That's the big problem; and for that reason one needs to be very discerning while reading words the translators add inside brackets.

Another one of those malicious and baseless tafsirs by one of those medieval clerics.  Haleem should have mentioned his name.

I think it could be either Tabari or Ibn Kathir.  Both have acquired knighthood for distorted commentaries and guesswork ... just as Rushie was knighted for following Tabari.
