It's worse than a prison .. it's a concentration camp.  Children as young as 10 or 11 are having to care for their younger siblings ages 2, 3 and 4 becoz many have lost both parents.  It's a very, very, very tearful situation there.

October 20, 2023, 04:24:44 pm Zainab_M: Right sister Heba.  Gaza hospital bombing has the fingerprints of Israel all over it.  For Israel this is no big crime.  They have done this and much worse many times in the past and intend to do the same and worse many more times in near future.
October 20, 2023, 04:20:20 pm Heba E. Husseyn: Catching Zionist lies isn't hard. Soon after Gaza hospital bombing killing and maiming hundreds, Israel was quick to accuse Islamic Jihad of a misfired rocket.  That didn't sound plausible because IJ does not have such sophisticated bombing devices.  Zionist lie was fully exposed when anglican archbishop of Jerusalem,Hosam Naoum,  said today that 3 or 4 days prior to boming Israel had warned Gaza hospital to evacuate. Yet CIA claims in its flawed analysis that the rocket did not come from Israel.  But conveniently does not explain how Israel could have known 4 days earlier that a "misfired" rocket from IJ was coming.  Yet on the basis of this flawed & bias analysis of CIA, Biden is comforting Israel he believes Israel didn't do that war crimes bombing.

 BismEm

As-Salam Alaykum folks.

An adult daughter of an elderly sister friend of mine was getting a bit confused the other day.   She was asking how could people feel happy in Jannat if their existence there will be only in soul and not the body, as we are now.      Unfortunately these folks don't read the Quran yet they are quick to attribute their confusion to the Quran.

First off, there's no reason to presume that existence of soul without body in the next realm won't be nice.  In fact it would be far more exhilarating than the soul encased within the body in earthly life when the soul has to carry the earthly burdens of the body like physical pain, hurt, fatigue, emotional sadness, fear of hunger etc.   However, the truth is  that whoever among us is fortunate enough to enter Jannat (Paradise) will actually be in body and soul as now, minus the physical burdens which the body carries in earthly existence.  And the bodies of the unfortunate ones destined to Hellfire will suffer far greater agony than they could expect in this world.  Verse 56 of Surah 4 in a clear example of the suffering endured by the body in Hellfire in the case of the disbelievers and the disobedient. "Indeed! Those who disbelieve Our revelations, We shall expose them to the Fire. As often as their skins are consumed We shall exchange them for fresh skins that they may taste the torment." 4:56.   There are several such Verses which plainly indicate that the soul will be within the body on that Day and onward.

Our existence on the Day of Judgement, whether one is assigned Paradise or Hellfire, will be in body and soul.  A simple analysis of Quranic Verses confirms this aspect.

"They are asking you concerning the Spirit. Say: The Spirit is by command of my Rab, and of knowledge you have been vouchsafed but little."  (17:85)

"Allah receives (men's) souls at the time of their death, and that (soul) which dies not (yet) in its sleep. He keeps that (soul) for which He has ordained death and dismisses the rest till an appointed term. Indeed! herein verily are portents for people who take thought." (39:42)

Following is the explanation of the above two Verses from Sister Zeynab's post, it's link available below under related post below.

"Verse 17:85 (Surah Bani Israel or Al-Isra) clearly confirms the existence of the soul and it's at Allah's command, that humans have been granted no further knowledge about it.

Verse 42 of Surah 39 (Az-Zumar)  states that the souls can also be in the custody of Allah while they are asleep.  But the Verse clarifies that Allah takes away the soul permanently only when He ordains death for that soul.  Those for whom death hasn't yet been ordained, their soul is returned to their body by will of Allah. So, they're able to wake up from sleep. In other words, those for whom the Divine Decree of death hasn't been issued yet, wake up from their sleep because their appointed time for death has not yet arrived
."

Thus, Verses 17:85 and 39:42 confirm that the soul exists, it is in the command and custody of Allah and that the soul does not die with the body during death.   Surely, Allah preserves the soul somewhere but He has not disclosed where.

Now let us read Verse 20:55.

"And from the earth We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time." (20:55).

This confirms that Allah Almighty created the human body with earth (or clay) and after death, that body mingles with earth again.  The last Words of this Ayat "and from it We will extract you another time" alludes to Resurrection and the unification of the body and soul.  It doesn't matter how the remains are disposed of.  That's totally irrelevant in the Sight of Allah, in that, it's very easy for Allah to bring back the physical remains in the form of earth or dust of every dead individual and living being.  Even people of other religions who don't bury the dead and instead  cremate or whatever method they may implement to dispose of the body, that body still eventually goes back to dust.  Even if a person blown to dust in an explosion or dies drowning in the sea and their remains never found, doesn't matter to Allah.  He knows where to find the earth with which He created them at first; it's very easy for Him to recreate them and reunite their souls with their bodies on the Final Day.  For example, let us focus on Verse 37:144 Surah As-Saffat about Prophet Yunus (pbuh).  At first he fled from the responsibility entrusted to him by Allah.  Prophet Yunus boarded an overloaded ship where he was selected as an unwanted passenger and thrown overboard into the sea and subsequently swallowed by the big fish.  But eventually Allah Almighty rescued Prophet Yunus because he was basically a very obedient slave of Allah.  Thus Allah mentions  "And the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy; And had he not been one of those who glorify (Allah) He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised;" (37:142-144).  Quoting Sister Zeynab in the post Prophet Yunus (Jonah) in the Noble Quran, "This does not mean that the fish would have lived till the Day of Resurrection and that Prophet Yunus would have remained alive in its belly till then.  But it simply means that as a penalty, Allah would not rescue him and he would have died after being swallowed by the fish, to be raised on the Day of Resurrection."  My point here is, that are are many people who have died as victims of sea predators such as sharks etc. In due course of time their remains maybe ejected from the bellies of the killer big fishes and the remains of such folks are non-existent in our eyes.  But NOT in the Sight of Allah The Almighty.  The system with Allah Almighty is perfect.  He has the exact knowledge and information of every person's remains turning into dust and He extracts precisely that to recreate that body and unite it with the soul which is already in His command.  Thus Allah Almighty says in Verse 31:28  "Your creation and your raising (from the dead) are only as (the creation and the raising of) a single soul. Indeed! Allah is Hearer, Knower.."

It's now very simple to figure out what happens during Resurrection.   When we are raised again and stand before Allah on the Day of Judgment, we will be in body and soul.

Very, very nice read.  Very logically analyzed directly from the Noble Quran.  You're right Sister Ruhi, people often complain dumping their own lack of understanding on the Quran.    Complete answers to all complex queries are available in the Quran, spread over various Verses.  If one is a regular reader to the Quran from start to finish as a permanent process of life, one will be very well acquainted with this aspect.  But careless readers who may have read the Quran just once in their lifetime or may have read just a few Verses, will expect every answer to be found fully in a single Verse.  It's not like that in the Quran.  To answer certain questions, you need to piece together Verses relevant to that topic from various Surahs and then grasp the specific meaning or allusion.

Concerning Verse 39:42,  "and that (soul) which dies not (yet) in its sleep."  Do you think this refers to the soul passing out of the body temporarily during sleep, OR is it a metaphorical comparison of death with sleep?

Salaam Sis Ruhi.  Wonderfully analzed.

Very correctly put Sis Heba.

Concerning Verse 39:42,  "and that (soul) which dies not (yet) in its sleep."  Do you think this refers to the soul passing out of the body temporarily during sleep, OR is it a metaphorical comparison of death with sleep?

You know Sister, my first impression was the latter, as you stated, a metaphorical comparison of death with sleep.   But most commentators of the Quran think it refers to the soul exiting the body temporarily during sleep.  So, only Allah Almighty would know best.    From our perception, it can be understood either way.  I haven't found any content in the Quran that can  confirm this concept of the soul passing out of the body temporarily during sleep.

Verse 6:60 of Surah Al-Anam has also been translated by many as "And it is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have committed by day."  But this translation is likely not correct in accordance with the original.  The original Arabic does NOT mention the word "soul" in this Verse.   Original Arabic states: "wahuwa allazi yatawa-ffakum bi-al-layli waya lamu ma jarahtum bil-nahari."    Word by word translation of the original by Corpus Quran is:

wahuwa = "And He"
allazi = "The One Who"
yatawa-ffakum  = "takes your"  ....... and then Corpus Quran puts "soul" in brackets, that is, "takes your (soul)"
bi-al-layli  = "by the night"
waya lamu =  "and He knows"
ma  =  "what"
jarahtum   =  "you committed"
bil nahari   =   "by the day."

Pickthall's translation is the only one that does not mention the word soul.   Quote as follows:

"He it is Who gathers you at night and knows that which you commit by day." (6:60).

Here is the complete translation of Verse 6:60:
"He it is Who gathers you at night and knows that which ye commit by day. Then He raises you again to life therein, that the term appointed (for you) may be accomplished. And afterward unto Him is your return. Then He will proclaim unto you what ye used to do."

As can be easily understood, Verse 6:60 refers to people returning home at night from their daily work, in connection to which Allah says that He knows what they do in the day.  Then the reference is clearly to Resurrection which comes after death (or the "term appointed" that has been "accomplished") and after Resurrection we return to Allah Almighty Who will inform each one of us about our deeds and intent.    This is how I understand it.   I think the Verse is very straight and simple.

Preceding and following Verses of certain Ayats may often help us to determine an indirect or direct reference of those certain Ayats.  But concerning Verse 6:60, its preceding Verse 6:59 and following Verse 6:61 also carry no allusions to the status of soul during sleep.

"And with Him are the keys of the Invisible. None but He knoweth them. And He knoweth what is in the land and the sea. Not a leaf falleth but He knoweth it, not a grain amid the darkness of the earth, naught of wet or dry but (it is noted) in a clear record."    6:59.

"He is the Omnipotent over His slaves. He sendeth guardians over you until, when death cometh unto one of you, Our messengers receive him, and they neglect not."   6:61.

So, where from do the translators get the idea of collecting or gathering the souls during sleep in Verse 6:60?

There are at least 3 ahadith I can quote which convey the connection between sleep and soul.  Could this notion have come into the minds of translators from there?   That's very possible.   Following are the hadiths on this topic.

Al-Bukhaari, 6312.   Also in Muslim 2711.   It was narrated from Hudhayfah that when the Prophet (pbuh) woke up, he would say: “Al-hamdu Lillahi alladhi ahyaana ba‘da ma amaatanaa wa ilayhi an-nushoor (Praise be to Allah Who has given us life after He caused us to die, and to Him will be the resurrection).”

Al-Bukhaari, 7474.  It was narrated from Abu Qataadah that when they slept and missed the prayer, the Prophet (pbuh) said: “Verily Allah took your souls when He willed, and He returned them when He willed.”

Abu Ya‘la in al-Musnad, 2/192;  also accepted by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 1/293.   Abu Juhayfah said:  The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was on a journey during which they slept until the sun rose. He said: “Verily you were dead and Allah returned your souls to you; whoever sleeps and misses a prayer, let him offer it when he wakes up, and whoever forgets a prayer, let him offer it when he remembers.”

I repeat, in regard to Verse 39:42 only Allah knows best.  We can only interpret to the best of our limited perception.  Only HE is the Final Authority.

Good pieces Sisters Ruhi and Zeynab.   I also had the same question put by Sister Heba in my mind since long.   I get now get it too.

In my opinion, I think those ahadith do play some role in influencing and tilting the minds of translators.  Furthermore, there is also an opinion from a 14th century hadith commentator named Zain Addin Abu Faraj commonly known as Ibn Rajab in a collection titled Fath al-Baari (3/326) where Ibn Rajab says:

"But the taking of the soul in sleep does not necessarily mean that it is completely separated from the body, as happens in death; rather the fact that the life remains in the body during sleep indicates that the soul is still connected to the body during sleep, but the connection is less than the connection when it is awake."   So as you can see, this person himself does not agree with the concept of the soul exiting the body during sleep in exactly the same way as during death.
