MashAllah, educative thread.   Your questions are very well perceived Sister Ruhi, Alhumdulilah.

Sis Zeynab, Br. TS, you've put your points so thoughtfully.  Alhumdulilah again.

Traditional sources are indeed replete with contradictions and certain things they may allow are thoroughly repellent.  While Hanibali and Shafi school prohibit eating snake, Malki school allows it provided there's no danger of poison to the eater and is cooked in the Islamic way.   Furthermore, hadith allows eating lizard (horrible!  Shocked ).

I've also read two false hadiths.  One says that a companion ate a cooked lizard in the presence of the Prophet (pbuh), and the Prophet refused to eat but did not declare it unlawful.

QuoteOn the authority of Ibn 'Umar ... a lizard was brought to Allah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) but he neither ate it nor declared it unlawful. .."  Sahih Muslim 4788.

The very next hadith in so-called sahih proves its falsification with the contradiction in which the same narrator, Ibn Umar, says the Prophet said he didn't like lizard as food but also said it's lawful.

QuoteIbn 'Umar reported that "there were some persons with Allah's Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) from among his companions, Saad being one of them. There was brought to them the flesh of the lizard when a lady amongst the wives of the Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: It is the flesh of the lizard. Thereupon the Prophet (way sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Eat, for it is lawful, but it is not my diet."   Sahih Muslim 4789.

Both ahadith completely false.
In other words, this false hadith insinuates that eating lizard is okay even though lizard is a reptile of the snake & crocodile family.  Thus, look at the confusion!    Islam Q&A tries to give that false hadith a facelift claiming it allows iguana not lizard.  Well, iguanas are even more reptilian than lizards, very similar to chameleons.   Also, to add to the confusion, Islam Q&A acknowledges the contradiction stating that imam Shafi said iguana is halal while imam Abu Hanifa said it's makrooh.

To conclude, which sane person would ever eat lizard or iguana or snake unless forced as a form of torture?

That's right Sister.  Hadith allows lizard and there's no damn difference between lizard and iguana when it comes to eating. I recall this was one of the earliest ones that began shaking my trust in the hadith institution where I observed the subtle contradiction.   I think first this hadith compiler wasn't sure whether or not he should label lizard as lawful to eat.  Later on he probably made up his mind to categorically say it's lawful by using the Prophet's (pbuh) name.

I've read that lie where hadith tries to tout lizard as a delicacy;  probably Bukhari's personal taste of food  Angry  yukh!  and everything he likes he legalizes it by attributing it to the Prophet (pbuh).
