It's worse than a prison .. it's a concentration camp.  Children as young as 10 or 11 are having to care for their younger siblings ages 2, 3 and 4 becoz many have lost both parents.  It's a very, very, very tearful situation there.

October 20, 2023, 04:24:44 pm Zainab_M: Right sister Heba.  Gaza hospital bombing has the fingerprints of Israel all over it.  For Israel this is no big crime.  They have done this and much worse many times in the past and intend to do the same and worse many more times in near future.
October 20, 2023, 04:20:20 pm Heba E. Husseyn: Catching Zionist lies isn't hard. Soon after Gaza hospital bombing killing and maiming hundreds, Israel was quick to accuse Islamic Jihad of a misfired rocket.  That didn't sound plausible because IJ does not have such sophisticated bombing devices.  Zionist lie was fully exposed when anglican archbishop of Jerusalem,Hosam Naoum,  said today that 3 or 4 days prior to boming Israel had warned Gaza hospital to evacuate. Yet CIA claims in its flawed analysis that the rocket did not come from Israel.  But conveniently does not explain how Israel could have known 4 days earlier that a "misfired" rocket from IJ was coming.  Yet on the basis of this flawed & bias analysis of CIA, Biden is comforting Israel he believes Israel didn't do that war crimes bombing.

BismEm

"Taught to him by one intense in strength -"   (53:5)  Translation Sahih International.

"It was taught to him by [an angel] with mighty powers  and great strength,"  (53:5-8)  Translated Abdel Haleem.

(This refers to Angel Gabriel as stated by Abdel Haleem at the footnote of his translation).

"Which one of mighty powers hath taught him,"   (53:5)   Translated Pickthall.

The confirmed reference in this Verse is to Angel Gabriel.  The Arabic words used by The Almighty in this Verse is "shadidu al-quwa"  the literal meaning of which is 'intense strength.'  The word "shadidu" (derived from shadid) can perhaps also be interpreted as 'mighty' but the correct and accurate translation is 'intense.'   The word "al-quwa" means strength, derived from the word 'quwa' (in Arabic) or 'quwat' ( قوت ) as pronounced in farsi and perhaps also in urdu.  Some translators have translated "al-quwa" as 'power.'   But again, that's not a very precise translation.  As you can see above, the only flawless and accurate translation of this Verse is by Sahih International that writes "intense in strength."

And look at Arberry's ridiculous translation.  This man seems have gone completely crazy.

Arberry translates Verse 53:5
"taught him by one terrible in power,"  (53:5)

This above translation by Arberry is completely wrong.   Don't know why such an incorrect translation was ever accepted.

That's very true.  Some readers who don't concentrate too well while reading the Noble Quran can commit a gross misinterpretation here.  For e.g. a sister neighbor who teaches the Quran to her teenage son with translation wasn't sure if V.53:5 was referred to Allah Almighty or an angel.  I was quite shocked at her misunderstanding.  Of course it wasn't intentional, she really has very little knowledge of both Arabic as well as English.   I got my copy of the Noble Quran and told her to carefully read from Verses 5 to 10 of Surah 53.  Then she understood and was very apologetic towards Allah.

BTW this Arberry is raving crazy.

I'm glad you corrected her, Sister Ruhi.   How can anyone possibly think V.53:5 refers to Allah?  Don't these people know the importance of connecting preceding or following Verses or in some cases both preceding and following Verses to determine the meaning of Quranic Verses?

Below are the complete Verses from 5 to 10 of Surah 53.

"Taught to him by one intense in strength - One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.  Then he approached and descended  And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.  And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed."  (53:5-10)  Translated Sahih International.

"It was taught to him by [an angel] with mighty powers  and great strength, who stood  on the highest horizon  and then approached––coming down until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer––and revealed to God’s servant what He revealed."  (53:5-10).  Translated Abdel Haleem.

Actually the word "His servant" can be better translated as "His slave" for which the Quran uses the expression "abdihi" derived from the word عبد (abd) which literally means 'slave' not servant.  The term 'slave' is always more suitable as it brings out greater emphasis on bondage to Allah Almighty alone compared to the term 'servant.'

OMG  .. that was a big misunderstanding by that sister.    And if you read Pickthall's manner of translation, then that sort of misunderstanding can lead to shirk (nauzbillah!).

I requote Pickthall's translation of V.53:5 already quoted by Sister Heba:
"Which one of mighty powers hath taught him,"

If ever anyone seriously thinks this refers to Allah, that person is committing shirk and is probably not even aware of it.   Of course, Pickthall's above translation refers to angel Gabriel.   Allah Almighty can NEVER be referred to as "one of the mighty powers,"  Allah Almighty can only be referred to as The One Mighty Power.

As long as the sister's mistake was unintentional based on genuine lack of knowledge and she corrected herself, InshAllah may forgive her.

Very correctly explained Sister Heba.  And that's a very important point you brought up brother TS.

InshAllah, I sincerely hope the sister now understands V.53:5 and has learned the significance of reading preceding and following Verses of all Quranic Ayats before starting to interpret.   If her knowledge of English is not sound enough, she should use the translation in her native language.

Secondly, I've never trusted a single translation by Arberry.  My personal advise to all, don't read his translations.

Yes, very correctly put sisters Heba, Zeynab and br. TS.

Actually that lady had genuinely misunderstood.  She completely corrected herself as well as re-taught her son the correct interpretation of that Verse and did a lot of taubah.  It was not at all intentional, so InshAllah Allah will forgive her.  She is a very simple sister and very Faith bound, albeit a hadither.     Her native language is urdu and both she and her husband know very little English.  But the son who has been born and raised in the west hardly understands urdu.  So she has to teach him the translation in English.  I told her that if ever she's not sure of any English translation of an Ayat, she should make a note of it and ask me ... that she must be very careful not teach anything so wrong particularly when it concerns an aspect as important as Monotheism (Tawheed).

InshAllah, ameen.

Yes, let her seek help from you whenever she's not sure of the explanation.
