 BismEm

As-salam Alaykum dear sisters, brother.   It's been pretty long as my awfully hectic schedule prevented me from coming here at my wonderful MV.   Partly busy and partly the post Ramadan blues .....  My husband and I are trying to adhere to much the same spiritual routine as we did in Ramadan, and the kids are loving it  Smiley

So .. yesterday I was reading Surah Al-Baqrah and I would be grateful if any of you highlight the parables in the following Verses as per your opinion.   My husband and children are also eager hear your explanation.

"Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindles fire, and when it sheds its light around him Allah takes away their light and leaves them in darkness, where they cannot see, Deaf, dumb and blind; and they return not."  (2:17-18).

"Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder and the flash of lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears by reason of the thunder-claps, for fear of death, Allah encompasses the disbelievers (in His guidance, His omniscience and His omnipotence)."  (2:19).

"The lightning almost snatches away their sight from them. As often as it flashes forth for them they walk therein, and when it darkens against them they stand still. If Allah willed, He could destroy their hearing and their sight. Lo! Allah is able to do all things."  (2:20).

Allah bless you all, dear folks.   May HE always be with us.  Ameen.

Bism'Allah and walaikum as salam.

Suhban'Allah and wow dear sis!   May The Almighty grant plenty of اجر to all of you.    We've been trying much the same but sometimes we really trail behind in time.   Kids are a big help with housework but it's the workplace responsibilities of our little yet growing business (Alhumdulilah) that are so time consuming.  At times I'm left hoping that each day had more than 24 hours  Cheesy    Ramadan blues has been around us too.  Once we get used to the Ramadan schedule, it just doesn't feel good to return to the rest of the 11 months.  But that's earthly life.  In the next life is the real pleasant existence.  Indeed we need HIM at every minute, every second of our present lives for success in the next.  Ameen ya Rab.

Coming to explain the references in Verses 2:17-20.

"Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindles fire, and when it sheds its light around him Allah takes away their light and leaves them in darkness, where they cannot see, Deaf, dumb and blind; and they return not."  (2:17-18).

Kindling fire and shedding light alludes to the Light of Truth and Divine Guidance, that is, the Message of the Noble Quran.  It's this Light that's the Sole Criterion and differentiates right from wrong.  The wise are able to discern.  The unwise are not.  The hypocrites and the idolaters were blinded by ancestral traditional beliefs as well as self-interest.  Thus, they experienced darkness and no Light.  Allah denies Light only to those who aren't interested in seeking the Truth.  Those prefer error over guidance are the ones whom HE abandons.  This is what the line means quote "Allah takes away their light."   Since they themselves turned away from the Light of Truth and chose to wander in the darkness of falsehood, Allah let them go astray.

Thrusting their fingers in their ears is an allusion to the disbelievers deluding themselves, temporarily presuming that they were safe or protecting themselves. But they can never because Allah, with all His powers, is present around them.

"The lightning almost snatches away their sight from them. As often as it flashes forth for them they walk therein, and when it darkens against them they stand still. If Allah willed, He could destroy their hearing and their sight. Lo! Allah is able to do all things."  (2:20).

The reference to those hypocrites with doubt, suspicion and lack of Faith. They may not have been complete disbelievers, but they practiced Faith only to the extent that was convenient for them without the hardships of any sacrifices.   In this Verse the parable is remarkable, Mash'Allah.  Rainfall is symbolic of Faith, a blessing for humanity.   Darkness, thunder and lightning denote approaching problems, that is, difficulties and danger experienced because of the opponents of the Prophet (pbuh).  These hypocrites were so terribly self-serving that whenever the situation eased, they willingly came toward Islam.  But whenever an obstacle had to be overcome, they stood still and silent.

Destroying their hearing and sight means that Allah could, if He willed, completely destroy the ability of these hypocrites to grasp the Truth, just as many such folks have already been deprived of guidance because of their own lethargy.   But it is the will of Allah to give them the opportunity to hear and understand the Truth.  And then to whatever extent they grasp it depends on their effort, hard work and humility toward Allah.
