Very correctly explained Sister Heba, Sister Ruhi.

Another point one needs to mention, a theory often put forth by modern observers promoting permissiveness, claims that these demimondaines indulged in this sordid life as a "traditional" method for the purpose of collecting "dowry."   First off, this is no excuse for collecting "dowry."  Secondly, the excuse is completely false.  There was no pressure of  "dowry."  Throughout the Middle East (and it wasn't different in Algeria)  it's the men who carry the responsibility of providing dowry, not the other way round.  Women aren't required to pay a single penny, not even for the wedding dress.  Westerners don't know much about this aspect;  according to their marriage customs, the man provides the dowry.  So, they concocted this excuse for the Naeelya prostitutes to make them appear vulnerable as if they were indulging in this horrible profession under compulsion.  Totally wrong perception.
