November 01, 2023, 03:38:26 pm Zainab_M: Keep praying, praying a lot for Gaza. It's worse than a prison .. it's a concentration camp.  Children as young as 10 or 11 are having to care for their younger siblings ages 2, 3 and 4 becoz many have lost both parents.  It's a very, very, very tearful situation there.
October 26, 2023, 03:40:19 pm N. Truth Seeker: Don't forget to look up MV Blog Zainab's Lounge for our Gaza updates.
October 20, 2023, 04:24:44 pm Zainab_M: Right sister Heba.  Gaza hospital bombing has the fingerprints of Israel all over it.  For Israel this is no big crime.  They have done this and much worse many times in the past and intend to do the same and worse many more times in near future.
October 20, 2023, 04:20:20 pm Heba E. Husseyn: Catching Zionist lies isn't hard. Soon after Gaza hospital bombing killing and maiming hundreds, Israel was quick to accuse Islamic Jihad of a misfired rocket.  That didn't sound plausible because IJ does not have such sophisticated bombing devices.  Zionist lie was fully exposed when anglican archbishop of Jerusalem,Hosam Naoum,  said today that 3 or 4 days prior to boming Israel had warned Gaza hospital to evacuate. Yet CIA claims in its flawed analysis that the rocket did not come from Israel.  But conveniently does not explain how Israel could have known 4 days earlier that a "misfired" rocket from IJ was coming.  Yet on the basis of this flawed & bias analysis of CIA, Biden is comforting Israel he believes Israel didn't do that war crimes bombing.
July 29, 2023, 03:02:07 am Zainab_M: Yesterday was Ashura, Muharram 10, 1444 (July 27, 2023).  Read about this very tragic day and details of the world's greatest 7th century revolutionary: WHO WAS HUSSEIN.
June 28, 2023, 09:48:39 am Zainab_M: Walaikum As Salaam.  This was the first Hajj open to all after the pandemic. It was attended by 2.6 million Muslims.

As-Salam Alaykum everyone.
We get newsletters from the Al-Huda Islamic Centre periodically.   Their recent newsletter read as follows:

"Al Huda Muslim Society is proud to announce the beginning of the registration period for its sixth annual Holy Quran Memorization Course for children ages 5 and older.   We strongly encourage efforts to strengthen the foundation of your children's religion through this beneficial program, and may Allah (swt) reward you in this world and the hereafter.    Wasalam"

Teaching children to memorize the Noble Quran from age 5 ....  we know it's great to memorize the Noble Quran.  We also know it's just as important to understand every word of what we memorize otherwise it will not be possible to implement Quranic values in our daily lives.  And we also know that in accordance with Quranic principles, religion cannot be separated from life.  The Noble Quran is a Book of religious as well as practical guidance.  It includes all practical aspects of life - social, legal, educational, historical, scientific.  The Noble Quran details the rules of marriage, divorce and separation.  It informs us that menstruating women should abstain from marital relations with their husbands until menstruation is over.  It tells married couples to refrain from sexual relations while they are fasting.  It commands us to write business transactions for keeping records.  It informs us on the importance of having witnesses while resolving disputes.   It mentions about bequests and distribution of inheritance .... and other aspects, laying the cornerstone of a civilized society.

Is it possible for children as young as 5, 6 or 7 to correctly understand all such significant and high-priority topics?  Obviously not.  So, when they start reading the Quran for the purpose of memorization at age 5 or 6, we know that it's only a vocalized practice, not beyond that.

The tradition of ختم  قران  (finishing the reading of the Quran) for children of the same age is much the same except that children are taught to read the entire Quran, not necessarily memorize it.

But in neither of the two events are children taught the essential instructions contained in the Quran, and it's not possible to teach those very relevant contents until children reach middle school (at least) or preferably high school.

What's your opinion on Huda Islamic Centre's Quran Memorization course for children from age 5?

Walaikum Salam sis Ruhi.  I understand your perspective perfectly.

In my opinion it's fine to hold the event .. to teach the reading of the Quran.  If these little kids are able to memorize the entire Quran (or portions of it), that's great.  However such an event should be viewed as an initial formality, laying the foundation of a far more serious study of the Quran later in life when these children are grown enough to understand the highly significant subjects explained and instructed by The Almighty.  In that case, I think this event is a very good idea.  But if it stops here and goes no further, that certainly would be thoroughly insufficient and a huge oversight.  Unfortunately there are people and societies with such ideas.  I wouldn't know what's Huda Centre's take on this, but I hope their approach is to view this event as the start of a long journey on learning the Quran, otherwise it might not be too rewarding in the Sight of Allah Almighty.

Exactly!  This is the crux of the matter.

Furthermore, I'm quite sure this doesn't refer to memorizing the whole Quran, just a bit of it.   Most likely it would include memorizing Surah Fathiha, Surah Akhlas and Surah Kauser.

That's right Sister Zeynab.  I think so too.   Allah Willing, hopefully this is intended to be the first step of a much longer journey of Quran study with proper interpretation and commentary.

Right, thanks for the feedback sisters.

Okay, I didn't know this.  Sounds correct.  But whatever they memorize, they must be taught the meaning otherwise the work is left incomplete, right?
