In Islam is the husband or wife allowed to participate in ghusl of their deceased spouse?   I heard it is, but this is surely never practiced.  Want your opinion.

Indeed it is surely never practiced because Islam does NOT allow it.  The unacceptable concept has crept in from a couple of ahadith which are definitely unauthentic and false.  Our beloved Prophet (pbuh) NEVER said such a thing.  The two ahadith from differing sources conveying this notion come in very different words further proving their unauthenticity.  One from Ahmed and Majah says "Aishah narrated that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings upon him) said to her, 'If you die before me, I will wash you myself.' "   The other from some different source (don't know the name of that source) says "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Aisha 'What harm would it be to you if you die before me? I will then wash and enshroud you, and then pray over you and bury you.' "  Both these ahadith are completely false.  Just ignore them.

In every Muslim family / household it is unimaginable for a husband to wash his deceased wife and vice-versa.  After death neither the husband nor wife should be looking at their deceased spouse's nakedness during a ceremony such as ghusl.  The correct method as allowed in Islam and which is always practiced by all Muslims is women washing a deceased woman and men washing a deceased man.

Most, if not all, jurists have rejected those forged ahadith and have plainly said NO to such a practice. Only some deviant or ignorant folks accept it.  But even such ones never practice it.

All learned scholars have said that the notion of "washing their deceased spouse" refers to making funeral arrangements like paying for the ghusl to those who carry out the ritual, buying and paying for the kaffan (shroud), paying the cost of the qabr (grave), paying for the transportation etc.   It certainly does NOT literally mean that husband or wife are allowed to bathe their deceased spouse.  Not at all.

It's perfectly fine to view one's deceased spouse before or after ghusl.  But NOT during ghusl. 

It's also perfectly fine for husband or wife to participate in the funeral ceremony of their deceased spouse but this does NOT include ghusl.

Furthermore, this falsehood contains another absurdity according to some absurd sources.  They claim while wife is allowed to wash deceased husband, not the other way round.  Their illogical argument is that after death marriage is immediately annulled so husband cannot touch the deceased wife.  But if the husband dies, the wife has to observe iddat so the marriage isn't annulled automatically and she can touch her dead husband.  In other words, this falsehood is also contradictory implying death annuls marriage in case of deceased wife but not deceased husband until iddat is complete.  Allah Almighty has NEVER stated any such thing in the Quran in regard to death.  The Quran never says death automatically annuls marriage, yet this does not stop a widow or widower from remarrying because death is the final departure of a soul from this dunya.   Allah only mentions that a divorcee or a widow must wait (iddat) for 4 months and 10 days (V.2:234-235) before deciding to get married to another man so that in case she's pregnant with her former husband's child, it will be known.

The Noble Quran has clearly indicated that death does not necessarily end the emotional link between husband and wife.  The Almighty says He will unite believing spouses in Jannat along with all other believers.

"Gardens of perpetual residence; they will enter them with whoever were righteous among their fathers, their spouses and their descendants."  13:23.

"Indeed the companions of Paradise, that Day, will be amused in [joyful] occupation - They and their spouses - in shade, reclining on adorned couches."  36:55-56.

"Enter the Garden, you and your spouses, to be made glad."  43:70.
