Janaza prayer

Salam.    Can you please mention the method of janaza prayer.   I would think it is not exactly the same as regular prayer, right?

Walaykum Salam.    Right, it's not exactly the same, in that, there are no ruku and sajood in janaza prayer like in regular salat because janaza prayer is offered with the covered body or bodies of the deceased placed before the jam'aah.  Therefore the people are not to bow or prostrate.  Also, there is no adhan or Iqama for janaza prayer, and it consists of one rakat.

Method is as follows:

- Make the niyyah (intention) and say Allah-o-Akbar (takbeer).
- Utter "auzubillah minashaitan nirajeem" (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaitan).
- Then recite Al-Fathiha and a short Surah or a few Ayat as in regular salah.
- Next, say Allah-o-Akbar again.
- Then recite durood.
- Say Allah-o-Akbar a third time.
- Make supplication for the deceased.  There are several supplications from traditional sources.  But you can also make supplication in your own words.
- After supplication, say Allah-o-Akbar a fourth time.
- Finally pronounce the tasleem (salam) (Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmat-Allah) which can be done by turning your face only to the right, or some turn their faces on both sides as in regular salah.

Thank you.     Supposing a janaza is scheduled after Dohr salat.   If people join offering the janaza prayer, does that replace the Dohr salat?

No, no.  It doesn't mean that.  Janaza or funeral prayer is NOT a substitute for any of the Fard (obligatory) prayers.   If a janaza is scheduled after Dohr or Asr, then first the congregation will offer the regular obligatory Dohr or Asr salat.  Then after a short gap, maybe 10 or 15 minutes, the janaza prayer is offered after which the body of the passing soul is taken for burial. 

Only the Fard rakats of the obligatory salat are offered in congregation prior to the janaza prayer;  the sunnah or nafl rakats can be offered by individuals later, after they return home.
