BismEm

Salaams to all ..

An outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in UK early this month (Aug.2007) has again started creating tension in that country.  This is the second outbreak in recent times and thought to have spread from the research laboratories nearby.  The first outbreak was in the summer of 2001 when over 6 million cattle and sheep were killed.  Thousands of farmers lost their livelihoods.  Some suffered such tremendous financial loss that they couldn't ever get back to farming.  Those who did now simply dread to think of a repetition of what happened in 2001.

Foot and Mouth (FMD) is caused by a virus and is contagious.  It can spread rapidly among farm animals.  Deer and elephants can also get infected.  Usually it's non-fatal in animals.  The symptoms are fever that lasts for a few days, accompanied by blisters in the mouth and feet of the animals.  The blisters in the mouth can cause drooling and foamy saliva.  Vaccines have not always proven to be affective because the disease has several different strains.

However, here's the most important issue:
Humans cannot get infected by animals.  Also, humans cannot get infected by eating the meat of an infected animal.

Thus, FMD control has aroused a huge ethical controversy. The disease is non-fatal and NO threat to humans at all.  Most infected animals recover completely and lead full lives. Yet, millions of animals have been slaughtered to prevent the spread of the disease.  This brutal step is taken only because the virus creates a needless fear among ignorant people in other countries, leading to a trade ban on the import of animals and animal products from the places where FMD has spread.  Thus, it's all about money and economic repercussions. Many animal rights activists argue that it is unfair to kill millions of animals for monetary concerns.

The concerned authorities worldwide ought to think rationally and educate themselves about this disease and it's harmless affects.  The government's decision to have these poor healthy animals killed because of a minor recoverable illness and subsequently ruin the livelihoods of so many farmers only to satisfy the whims of their trade partners shows unimaginable cruelty and a thoroughly ruthless mentality on both sides.  How shameful!

Please pass this on to create awareness regarding the truth of this matter.

JazekAllah Khair ..   thanks

An Important Addendum:

Please do not mix up the contents of this post with the restrictions currently in place for Covid19 during the ongoing pandemic.  Covid19 is a very different disease that initially came from exotic (unusual) animals (such as bats, pangolins, bamboo rats etc.) kept in crowded and unhygienic cages in the live markets of China.  From these animals the virus jumped on to humans.  In humans Covid19 has a high mortality rate, much higher than the common flu, particularly among those who are over 45 and with those having underlying health issues of all ages.  In regard to Covid19, there are no exaggerations.   The restrictions and medical guidelines are very essential.   Please follow them meticulously.  Don't let down your guard because vaccines have arrived.  There is still a long road ahead.  It will take a long time for entire nations to get vaccinated.  It will take a very long time for the global vaccination campaign to be completed.   At all times in public, wear your mask, observe physical distancing, carry an effective hand sanitizer and wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly after arriving home.

Very good post sister.  I sent it around too.  Thank Allah Almighty this time the FMD outbreak wasn't that widespread.  Importers all over the world must be informed about the truth of FMD, that it's nothing to get panicky about.

Salaam sister
Foot and mouth does cause concern for farmers and mostly politicians.  In the united kingdom we have also had other illnesses caused by cow meat.

Consumers have caught CJD or mad cows disease from infected cows, but this is different to FMD.

The culture in united kingdom is very stict concerning these matters we live in a culture of risk and law suits etc. I agree with you, industry and businesses does suffer and it is sad to see

many animals culled.  In fact back in 2001 a farmer who owned the farm where fmd started killed himself, as he could not face the stress and consequence of it all.

Politicians and get away with all this as they probably have insurance to cover losses etc.

Yes, of course FMD is much different from Mad Cow Disease or BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy).  My query was based precisely on this point.  Unlike BSE, humans cannot get infected  with FMD.  FMD is neither transmitted from animal to human, nor can humans get it by eating the meat of animals infected with FMD.  In the light of this confirmed finding, I do not understand the panic and  culling of hundreds of thousands of animals followed by trade bans.  This is weird, isn't it?

Alhumdulilah, a very essential annexure for sure.   Thank you Sister Zeynab.

It's more than a bit amazing that many governments around the world took FMD more seriously than the really deadly Covid19 that's ravaging communities at present.
