Every Single Moment

When we look back at our past, everything seems to be like a single moment. Years spent doing something seems to appear as one moment in time.

All the things you did in your life from this point on till the beginning of your life, does not seem representative of the effort it took to live through each moment of them. When you lived through those moments, you felt the stress, strain and anxiety of the mental and physical demands each situation posed on you. Yet, it all seems like it never happened now because it has come to pass and become a single point in memory.

The most interesting thing is that even when all of your history is but just one point in immagination, each and every single moment of life that you had to live through will be judged with scrutiny by Allah. Ultimately, did you do what you did in those moments trying to seek Allah's pleasure?

The following Verses of the Qur'an draws our attention to the above:

"By Time! The human being is indeed in loss. Except those who believe, do good works, support one another with the truth, and support one another with perseverance." [Qur'an Surah Al-'Asr]

Points to note is that, Allah sarts by saying "By Time!", drawing our attention to how time passes as we noted above. By default, all of what a person does in the time allocated to him in this life is "indeed in loss". However, exception is if the person is a believer who sincerely seeked to earn Allah's pleasure in this world in every moment of his life. The true believer kept in mind that these moments will come to pass very quickly, as the Verse points out, with only their sincere intention and good works noted down by Allah.

Therefore, what people should do is spend every moment being conscious of Allah. Orientating all deeds such as, kidness, justness, charity, humbleness, love, worship, purely to seek the pleasure of Allah. Otherwise, the individual will find nothing at the end of his life to show to Allah, and will be as the Verse indicates, one of those in loss by the passing of time.

Alhamdulilah, what a gorgeous piece brother!  The past, however complicated, difficult or happy it might have been, appears in our minds when we look back as a winding course of a river .. silent, murky and distant, and quite insignificant now that it's gone by.  Long stretches of years during various stages of our lives we were so wrapt up in, seems like a passive dream when it's past.  Similarly, when a person dies and the body is carried away for burial, it looks so serene and disconnected from its surroundings that had once kept it so busy and distracted .. as if it never had anything to do with this world at all.

The most interesting thing is that even when all of your history is but just one point in immagination, each and every single moment of life that you had to live through will be judged with scrutiny by Allah. Ultimately, did you do what you did in those moments trying to seek Allah's pleasure?

So, so true.  And it's tremendously sad to realize how little the unthinking ones among us reflect on this point.  Allah says in the Quraan that on the Day of the Tryst, each one of us will have our Book of Record wide open before us .. that mankind will themselves be amazed to see that this Book has not left out a single aspect pertaining to their deeds.

"By Time! The human being is indeed in loss. Except those who believe, do good works, support one another with the truth, and support one another with perseverance." [Qur'an Surah Al-'Asr]

Wonderfully elucidated.  Your detailed reflections on the passage of time fit perfectly into the meaning of Surah Al-Asr as per the written illustration above.

I can only agree with you, brother.  It's unfortunate that many people find this point difficult to comprehend.   They make a distinction between doing good deeds for the sake of Allah and doing good for the sake of humanity.  For instance, recently I was conversing with a sister in my neighbourhood who apparently doesn't have a correct understanding of Allah and therefore nurtures faulty notions of the human existence and Salvation.  She mentioned that those who do charitable deeds with only the thought of God carry a "selfish" element in their nature because they're just thinking of their own ultimate reward, while those who sacrifice directly for humanity are more selfless.  I responded by explaining that a person who has correctly grasped the message of Allah will automatically link the cause of Allah with the cause of humanity.  Thus, the Quraan has reiterated so many times, "those who believe and do good works."  Both go together.  One without the other would be incomplete.  Doing a good deed for the love & pleasure of Allah creates that super-sensitive phenomenon known as conscience deep down within us.  Once we sincerely grasp His guidance, the conscience brightens up, drawing us toward acts of kindness, justice, humility etc. for the love of humanty.  But this depth of compassion and concern for humanity originates within us only through the love of Allah.  The common query from skeptical minds about this is -  what about those philanthropists who do serve humanity but reject spirituality altogether?  As per the standard norms of the Quran, if these people truly reject God then their worldly efforts will undoubtedly be wasted.  But the vital point here is, only the Almighty Allah is in a position of judge & decide who really rejects Him and who doesn't.  Not to mention .. unlike personal human philosophies, seeking the pleasure of Allah and making it a pre-requisite for other good deeds provides the strongest and most stable foundation that never alters its values nor does it ever lose sight of its goal.

Thanks for sharing such great thoughts.  Salaam Alaikum and peace.

Excellent post sister Zeynab and thanks for the kind words,

I am eager to discuss with you and others here more insight on this important concept of 'doing good' and 'desbelief' in the Qur'an. By the will of our Lord, perhaps we will learn a lot from one another.

Interesting dialogue between you and your neighbour there. I think conscience is something that every human being has been given. It is a God-given signal which indicates right and wrong. Every human being has one:

And a soul and Him Who perfected it. And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it. [Qur'an 981:7-8]

A believer has a conscience, but so does a disbeliever. The conscience of every single human being is identical, in that what the conscience indicates as wrong to one person is wrong to another person on the other side of the globe. The conscience is not to be confused with what we calle ones inner-self. Ones 'inner self' decides who we let ourselves become - the inner-self has the will to decide whether it obeys the conscience, or disobeys it. Ones innerself can override the right action signalled by the conscience because the innerself is can give into greed, desire to satisfy itself. The Satan can also whisper into the inner-self and take him away from the right action signalled by the conscience. This means a person can commit evil even with his conscience is telling him it is wrong. This is because his inner-self lead him to it, dosregarding the conscience. For example, the thief's conscience tells him he should not steal, yet his 'inner self' leads him to ignore this God-given conscience due to greed etc.

The difference between a believer and a disbeliever is that the believers inner self has a much greater will to obey its conscience. This is because the believer keeps affects of greed, selfishness at abayance. More importantly, he must do what his conscience tells him to in all situation in order to please Allah, and rescue himself from the Fire of Hell. His innerself therefore has firm grounding to follow his conscience, and it never gives way.

What promts a disbeliever towards good? Well, I would say it is primarily because his inner-self feels good by doing something conscienceous. His innerself finds gratification in following something his conscience signalled to him. But because he is a disbeliever and his motives are only to satisfy himself (by doing the right thing indicated by the conscience), it is very possible he can quickly stop doing the right thing when personal interests are no longer on his side and his inner-self is not advantaged. In that case, his inner-self looses its strength to do the right thing because doing the consceincous thing does no longer satisfy his innerself. Believing in Allah and doing good deeds primarily for Allah's pleasure means the believing person knows that Allah is always Ever-Watchful over what he does, so he never forsakes his conscience even when his innerself promts him towards selfishness/evil. As his inner-self is moulded by mindfulness of Allah, he always follows his conscience and continues doing under all circumstances.

For example, what stops a disbelieving man or a woman from cheating on his/her loyal spouse? It may be that one day they meet someone who they think will provide more gains in return, in that case they can easily fall into cheating their spouse. Essentially, there is no reason to not cheat on their spouse in that case because being loyal to their spouse is preventing them from indulging in a deed that will satisfy their innerselves even more, albeit it being displeasing to Allah (but that doesnt matter since they disbelieve in Him and no one is watching). Since they lack the will of a believer to obey their conscience (as their will to follow the conscience is based on satisfying the innerself), the chances of them falling into an error of this kind is far, far greater. The believer on the other hand will strictly follow his conscience so will never cheat on his spouse, because his will to obey his conscience is primarily based of earning Allah's pleasure and paradise.

Going back to what your neigbour said about a believers being more stingy than a disbeliever, the truth is quite the opposite. Because the disbeliever, if he does any good, does so only to satisfy his own inner-self. This is also a very weak basis for doing good. It stands on shaky groungs that can give way at any moment (as in the case of the couple above). That is why a disbelieving society provides a breeding ground for all sorts of immoral behaviour: injustice, untruthfulness, disloyalty, thieves, murderers, rapists and breed due to peoples lack of faith in Allah who created them.

So we see that the believer always does what is right and never stops doing so unlike a disbeliever. Allah is pleased with them because they did good while believing in Him and being mindful of Him. It is also to be noted that, the believer's inner-self is also satisfied by doing good such as giving in charity, just like a disbeliever's inner-self finds satisfaction. But the believer earns Allah's good pleasure while the disbeliever loses this great mercy. And because the believer knows that Allah is happy with him, his inner-self is even more fulfilled. He finds more peace in this world than a disbeliever, and an even better recompense in the Hereafter:

"Anyone who acts rightly, male or female, being a believer, We will give them a good life and We will recompense them according to the best of what they did. [Qur'an 16:97]"

As we noted, the disbelievers motives for good are a satisfaction of the inner-self only and not for the pleasure of Allah. Thus Allah says:

Say: "Shall I inform you of the greatest losers in their actions?" People whose efforts in the life of this world are misguided while they suppose that they are doing good." [Qur'an 18:103-105]

Besides all that, disbelievers are guilty of a great crime - it is that they denied the obvious existance of their Creator who favoured them so much inwardly and outwardly. No amount of good deed in this world can compensate for this crime and Allah will take them into account for denying and being arrogent about the countless number of blessings bestowed on them.

So sister Zeynab when you said

seeking the pleasure of Allah and making it a pre-requisite for other good deeds provides the strongest and most stable foundation that never alters its values nor does it ever lose sight of its goal.

You were completely right! It is indeed the most strongest and stable foundation for doing good. You made a good point about the Qur'an's use of the term 'those who believe and do good work" - the Qur'an makes consistant use of this expression to emphesise on the fact we are discussing.

And by time, death is comming, and we are in our test right now. Too many people are failing their test as we speak. When Allah guides any of us, we shoulld be thankful to Allah for guiding us, because if He willed, He could have misguided us as the rest: and you should glorify Allah for having guided you [Qur'an 2:185]

Assalamu alaikum. Smiley

I want to say here that the reasons for a disbeliever to do good can easily be reasons to do evil.

There is no reason why a disbeliever should not steal or harm people.

Agree with u 200% dear brother.  That's a very intelligent perception.  Since a disbeliever doesn't have that genuine thought of the Almighty Allah in his heart to train his conscience, his ideologies based on worldly causes are much more likely to sway.  Sometimes he might hit a good cause and sometimes not, it all depends upon his personal desires and convenience rather than any concrete principles reaching beyond this earthly world.  The only thing that needs to be clarified is that when we use the term "believer" it must mean a person who has truly and correctly understood the infinite power and greatness of God and our dependency on Him.  Such persons are few in number, unfortunately.

Salaam Alaikum and peace.  Hope u r doing well my brother Smiley

Im doing well sister. Just busy at the moment. Im sure all is well with you too inshaAllah.

Back to the topic, its a pitty that "Islamic" websites revolve around preaching superficial stuff and true religious concepts such as these become sidelined so much.

Harun Yahya is producing much of what true Islamic productions should be about, but even then there is something not quite right about everything he says (Mahdi business).

Today, I was explaining to some one that we have been created. This person does not want to devote himself to Allah. He draws on from the theory of evolution though unable to refute anything I say, its like he is blind to the fact that such a complex system cannot come about by blind chance. I was explaining the human visual system which consists up to fourty inter-dependant sub-systems, with one missing it doesnt function as an eye anymore. So none of these could have appeared by blind chance since they are interpependant and each require knowledge of the function of another component so there is intelligence in the design. But its like he is blind to it, as if Allah has removed something from his heart and placed something in front of his eyes...

You know, if Allah wishes to seal someones heart, who can undo what Allah has done to him or her?

There are many such dumb creatures in this world, and their extreme stubbornness keeps pushing them more into the dark by the minute.  As you would know, Allah has already referred to them in many Chapters of His Glorious Message.  It's a very important prophecy of the Noble Quraan.  Such people are of that unfortunate group who's case has been abandoned.  When the Almighty Allah decides not to guide someone, it's impossible for us to guide them.  These people have only themselves to blame for ruining their souls and hurting themselves eternally.

"And who doth greater wrong than he who hath been reminded of the revelations of his Lord, yet turneth away from them and forgetteth what his hands send forward (to the Judgment) ? Lo! on their hearts We have placed coverings so that they understand not, and in their ears a deafness. And though thou call them to the guidance, in that case they can never be led aright."  (18:57) Al-Kahf

May Allah protect us and keep us far away from the path of ignorance, ameen.   All praise to the Almighty Allah, The Highest, The Sublime.

Salaam and peace

Thanks sister Zainab.

The fact that when people do not devote themselves to Allah, reasons to do evil are just as valid as to do good is explained in the following short video by Harun Yahya

The living evidence for this fact is obvious, one just has to look at the state of societies around us and the condition of the world. If the whole world was to abide by Quranic morality, everyone would act rightly and be charitable. Conversely, one or two people adhering to their consciences in a disbelieving world brings no solution to the problems of the world like proverty - disbelieving people do not have any firm motivation to do coonstant good.

Salaam and many thanks for this link, dear brother.  And yes, I agree with you much when you say that just a few people who truly and correctly adhere to the Quraan in a largely disbelieving world aren't not enough.  The good motives, actions and voices of such persons are drowned by the deniers.  Another tough challenge that the minority of genuine believers have to face is isolation.  It becomes so difficult to find spiritual compatibility, and if there's no spiritual compatibility, earthly compatibility becomes elusive automatically.
