August 01, 2022, 08:48:12 pm Ruhi_Rose: As-Salam Alaykum MV guests. Just a reminder how time flies. We're already in the Islamic new year of 1444 month of Muharram, a very tragic time of our history. May The Almighty grant Hussein bin Ali and his comrades the best spot in Paradise for their unflinching courage to uphold the values of the Final Message, The Noble Quran.  Please read our post Ashura - who was Hussein? Fasting on the Day of Arafah is not obligatory, however it's a good day to observe a nafl fast for those healthy enough to do so.  Insh'Allah.

In regard to Verse 17:36, I also like the very all-inclusive commentary provided by Abu Alaa Maududi as follows:

Quote:

The reference "Do not follow that of which you have no knowledge" is very comprehensive. It demands that both in individual and collective life, one should not follow mere guess work and presumption instead of "knowledge". This instruction covers all aspects of Islamic life, moral, legal, political, administrative and applies to science, arts and education. It has thus saved the society from numerous evils which are produced in human life by following guesswork instead of knowledge. The Islamic moral code demands: Guard against suspicion and do not accuse any individual or group without proper investigation. In law, it has been made a permanent principle that no action should be taken against anyone without proper investigation. It has been made unlawful to arrest, beat or imprison anyone on mere suspicion during investigation. In regard to foreign relations, the definite policy has been laid down that no action should be taken without investigation, nor should rumors be set afloat. Likewise in education the so-called sciences based on mere guess-work, presumptions and irrational theories have been disapproved. Above all, it cuts at the very root of superstitions, for this instruction teaches the Believers to accept only that which is based on the knowledge imparted by Allah and His Messenger.

Walaikum As-Salaam brother.   The reference is ideological, that is, acceptance of social/religious concepts/practices without confirmation from Allah.  This would include a lot of illogical and unnecessary social and religious customs that are traditionally rife.  Many aspects professed in the ahadith or declared in fatwas would surely come into this prohibited category which Allah Almighty refers in V.17:36  as those outlets contain a lot of contents not warranted in the Noble Quran.

As for watching movies and reading books, whether foreign or local, the viewer's / reader's discretion is essential.  One needs to make sure whatever they're watching or reading is not indecent or lewd nor promoting any negative ideas that can wrongly impact one's mind and certainly NOT peddling any sort of values that clash with Monotheism (Tawheed).

(17:36) (xiii) Do not follow that of which you have no knowledge. Surely the hearing, the sight, the heart - each of these shall be called to account.

Salam all,

Is the verse above referring to people who engage in activities or express interests in subject matters that are foreign to them in reality? For example, watching foreign films/videos and reading foreign books that has nothing to do with the life of the reader?

Thank you and jazakallahu khayran
